Q6600 or E6850?

Well Im building a new pc and I was really set on making it future proof, so the Quad core Q6600 was the choice, especially after the recent price drops. I decided to research into what Quad core is capable of at this stage only to find not many applications and virtually no games use quad core. I have read that Quad core won't really hit games for another 2 years and I'm sure by then there will be better processors out.

Now I am a gamer and want to build a gaming rig. So the choice is: And feel free to add to and make your own surgestions.

Q6600
Price: £175.73
Core: 4
FSB(MHz): 1066
Processor: 2.4

E6850
Price: £177.45
Core: 2
FSB(MHz): 1333
Processor: 3.0

So I want a processor for gaming. Now oviously the Q6600 would be future proof, but would it be a waste of money if no applications use it? Is the E6850 a better choice, it crashes in at 1333MHz and 3.0GHz processor making it faster. So this really is the choice of 2 cores or 4, they match on price (in the UK). If I was to future proof my pc and get a Q6600, would it last the length of time until games use Quad? After all I am already goin 64bit and DX10.... So what do you guys think?

Thank you in advanced.

I would get the Q6600. Even though it's at 2.4Ghz, it still runs current games great, and the new games such as Crysis, HL2: EP2, and many others will be specialized for quad-cores.

I've just had a look at some bench marks and the E6850 has way more fps than the Q6600 in games, sometimes 100fps more...

Think of overclocking it. Anyhow Quad has more cores which means. It will run multi tasks at a faster rate.

Ok .

E6850 If that ran more than 2 Graphic tasks at once it would almost catch fire.
But with the Quad Q6600 You can Run 4 Graphic tasks while it's still cool and fast;)

So in a system thats high spec, a Q6600 wouldn't be a let down and would run a game like Crysis well you think?

What do you think I could over clock it to with a Antec p182 Performance one case and a Scythe Andy Samurai cpu cooler? Would I need to change the voltage?

I never overclocked before so allow the people who overlclock assest you;)

It depends which games your looking at and on what settings, because most games dont even get 100FPS on high settings. Unless your looking at games such as UT2004.

The software has to be programmed to do that tho. Does Vista use quad cores? What else can it 'multi task'? eg does quad core improve things such as the graphics card and memory helping it process faster?

A processer is hardware. It's like ok theres a DX10 game that requires a 768mb memory and yours is a 640. Sometimes quad will use some of it's cores to make up for it.

Yes, the programs need to be programmed to utilize quad-cores, and hardly any are.

A quad-core doesnt improve performance of the graphics card or memory.

So why choose quad core? What are its benefits?

Mainly multi-tasking and for those who want a higher 3DMark06 score.

If you are running alot of apps at once, you will notice a difference, but currently if you only game for instance, you wont notice a difference.

The main benefit of a Quad core is that it's got 4 cores. Sometime in the future you may need that extra processing power, whether in gaming or the latest apps.

But like Omega says there isn't much of a benefit to owning a Quad-core right now. :/
