hey, why verto 512mb is SOOOOO CHEEEAP?? it's like not even 150 bux in stores.. what's the catch?

That's not cheap at all, as ^^ said you can buy a 7600GT for less then that, which is alot better card.

oh okay, i think i'm getting it.. it's because of those letters "GS" in the name 7600GS? like if they were let's say GTX - the card would be a way more expensive, right?

what do those letters stand for anyways?

It's nvidia's naming scheme.. From order of worst to best, LE, GS, GT, GTX, Ultra. On the new cards GTS fits somewhere between GT and GTX.

GX2 is a separate designation meaning it's a dual GPU.

so the GTS i'm about to buy is not that bad after all. cool! :cool:

i wonder y can't they just name them geforce 1, geforce 2.. geforce 147, geforce 148.. and keep going.. have a whole eternity of numbers in order. and we'd always know that 3,745 is older than 43,574.. u no wat i mean?

Well they do, they have different series, such as the nVidia 6 series, 7 series, 8 series, and so on. And within those series, they have different variations, such as the 7300, 7600, 7800, 7950, etc. And within each of those models, they have different variations, such as LE, GS, GT, GTX, etc.

Seems somewhat simple, right? Then there comes the tricky part. You cant compare the 7 series to the 8 series to see whats better, for instance, the 8600 is not better then the 7900, and vice versa.

haha wow!! that's really tricky.. so what do u do? actually test them? what is it called - benchmarking?
 
The best way of comparing is looking at benchmarks, but you get a nack for these things after a while.

Generally speaking, when comparing the 6600 to the 7600, or the 7600 to the 8600, the next series up will be only a bit better.

nack meaning I have a thing for computer hardware, so I learned from experience and history how to make general comparisons just based on the model video card.

Yes they are different generations, but think of it this way. Any 6, 7, or 8 series card that is under X600 is basically a low-end card, and not a great gaming card. the X600 series are middle ranged cards, which can play games but are more for the people looking for a budget gaming card. the X800 and X900 series are for high end gamers mainly. When comparing cards you shouldnt look just on the series card it is. I would skip the first digit, and focus on the rest, as you should be able to see from these examples.

Just a few more example:

The 6600GT is better then the 7300GT
The 7800GT is better then the 8600GS
The 7950GX2 is better then the 8800GTS.

man you good!! so the nack is the skill, which you achieved from comparing video cards back and forth. that's pretty useful. are you as good with the rest of the hardware as with video cards? i'm talking about CPU, MoBo, RAM..

so according to your math, the BFG Tech BFGE86256GTSOC2FE GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card i picked for my new system (i shared it, but i'm not sure if it's the correct link) is pretty slow, isn't it? i'm a budget gamer i guess, cuz 300 is my limit for a video card.

should i go and search for another one, like within X600 range?

Comparing processors is even easier for me, but motherboards are a bit harder since theres alot more to consider when it comes to choosing the best motherboard.

The 8600GTS is a nice video card, better then the 7600 series, but IMO I would have spent the extra $40 and gotten the 8800GTS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130082

Just to clarify, the "x" stands for the 6, 7, or 8 series, not the ATI x600 (Just making sure here). The 8600GTS is the highest X600 series there is.

2. RAM - 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 Dual Channel
3. CPU - Quad Q6600
4. VIDEO - 8800GTS

what do you think? price-quality range, compatibility.. anything..
