why won't Word document open?

This morning I started a Word document and got about a page done,
then shut down for a little while.
Now when I try to open that document, it just presents the little box with my name and Word agreement - but it doesn't open the document

I wait and wait and wait
then try again
same thing - just the arrow and hourglass
then I can't even shut down the computer (using the off button with the arrow), so I have to press the computer on/off button, etc
something's not right

How to get things working properly with Word or that document?
 
Sounds like something is hanging the opening of the file. If you dont open the file, does the computer hang still? Let the computer sit for a few min after startup, then try to open it. See if it is MSword doing it.

how do I know if it is MS word doing it?

I had another Word document open this morning and that one I printed (10 pages), now I can't open it either - just that box with my name and agreement

virus scan - will try

when I tried later this morning,
documents won't open
Word won't open
instead it shows a white screen "WINWORD caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0006:00006cf4"
then I think it offered me OK - so I clicked on that

it returned me to my desktop, so I tried to click on IE
it then gave another white box "There is not enough free memory to run this program. Quit one or more programs and then try again"

I tried to shut down - got white box "Lucomserver_3_0 caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff9dfff."

somehow I got the machine turned off

Tried again later, tried Word and it offered me Safe Mode - so I clicked OK and it gave me Word in Safe Mode - but only the grey screen (nothing to work on)

Turned off the machine and tried later. Was able to get onto the internet again.

Any idea what is going on?
 
u mite be having a virus, boot to safe mode and then run a thorough virus scan of your hard drive
 
this is what happened -

somehow I got into the Word document in Safe Mode,
and it made available the document that I was working on earlier today

(I had been trying repeatedly to get into Word, I had tried to do norton scan, the little screen appeared but didn't seem to do anything when I clicked on
"scan" - just the hourglass - so I gave up for the time being)

So now I have this document open, have continued to work on it, but figure that if I close it and shut down, then I might not be able to open it again later)
