Overclocking Advice

Ok I have done a little overclocking before but that was a while ago on my old system. I have read the overclocking 101 and other sites. I'm now looking to buy a new system and want to overclock purely for the fact I want it to be faster.

So here is the system I've buying to overclock.

OS: Windows Vista 64 bit
Cpu: Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 w/ Thermalright Ultra-120
Mb: Asus P5N32-E SLI
Mem: 2x 1GB Corsair Dominator PC-8500
Hd: 150Gb WD Raptor
Gpu: 768 XFX GeForce 8800GTX
Mon: Samsung SM 22" Widescreen SM226BW
Psu: Antec TruePower Quattro 850w PSU
Case: Antec P182 Performance 1

Now I would like to overclock:
Quad Q6600 from 2.4 to 2.8, maybe 3.0 Mhz.
Maybe the graphics abit if its worth it
and overclock the Asus P5N32-E SLI so it will run the memory highier than the 800, to around 1000.

Anything else you would advise to overclock?

So I was wondering wat kinda of path would I follow? eg any voltage changes etc.

2.8 should be pretty easy to get to, all you should have to do is raise the FSB and lower the RAM speed. As you get higher up you will need to increase the voltage, but dont increase it too much. The best way is to just change the settings on your own, and see what works and what doesnt, thats the only real way to learn how to get the most out of the overclock.

So If I want to overclock my cpu, I have to make my Ram slower?

How would I know when the voltage is too high, like damaging high, lol.

Most mothebroards wont let you put the voltage up so high that it will damadge the cpu. Well mine is limited to plus 140 Mv.

If i were you id run your ram slower and find your maximum cpu speeds and fsb - once you have that you can then play around with ram speeds, voltages and timings

You dont have to, but it's easier for a novie to lower the RAM speed then it is to raise the voltages and tweak the timings.

And I wouldnt recommend going any higher than 1.5v, just because it produces alot more heat and you would need a much better cooling solution.
 
I'm pretty new to OCing too and if I just wanna OC my e6600 to like 2.8GHz (still have my stock heatsink/fan), then do I need to change my voltage or RAM speed or timing etc.? Even if i did have to change that stuff, i wouldn't know where to begin lol.
 
So my route of action would be: (correct me if im wrong)

Reduce ram speed and voltage
Increase cpu speed, multipliers and voltage
Increase ram speed and voltage
Increase graphics card speed and memory clock

So its worth getting Ram at 1066Mhz rather than 800? I should easily reach the 1066 with the dominator sticks right? I was told you need to put the voltage upto 2.2 for 1066Mhz tho.

You dont want to lower the RAM voltage, just the RAM speed. You cant increase the multiplier, only the FSB. But you will need to raise the voltage at some point.

IMO 1066 RAM isnt worth the price difference, I would just get a quality set of DDR2-800 and you should be able to take it up to 900-950 pretty easily.

I got mine up to like 1200Mhz, but im at 950 now and thats were i want to keep it. Were can you change the ram speed in bios? the only way i found to lower it is to decrease the multiplier. But it might be my bios, dont know
 
3ghz should be cake on air. q6600 runs hotter than dual cores so dont expect it to run higher than the dual cores on air.

dont know what options that mobo has for overclocking but. i overclock the ram highest stable first before i clock the cpu.

You must have had pretty high timings/voltages to get it up that high.

It depends on the BIOS, some let you change the multiplier while some let you change the RAM speed. The ones I personally like are the ones that change the multiplier, but show you the effective speed instead of just giving you a divider to choose from.

If your motherboard doesnt support anything higher then DDR2 800, then the only way to get faster RAM to work is to overclock it yourself.

Thats what I mean, What would I over clock on the motherboard?
 
Yeah i guess thats it, mines the multiplier. I had to lower it, if i didnt it would be like 1300mhz @3.33Ghz :P. I had it at 2v and 5-5-5-12 when it was at 1200ish mhz
