Problem connecting moden to PC via USB

We've always had 2 computers connected to the same modem. One via Ethernet and one via USB (probably not the best thing to be doing, but it worked). We recently got a new (second hand) computer, but the problem is the modem won't work via USB in it. I got a PCI USB card but that didn't work either. I know the card works because I've plugged other things in to test it, and I know the USB port of the modem works because I tested it on the old computer. I can't use the Ethernet plug with this PC, because it has a much longer cord which is needed for the other computer on the other side of the house.

Are there any settings or something I can change which might allow it to work (of course if I wasn't such a cheap ass I'd just buy a router, which I do plan on doing sometime in the not too distant future).

Thanks for any help.

Well i'm not quite sure how it worked in the first place because i thought modems like that were only designed to use one connection or the other. You could plug the one that works in via ethernet and if you had a spair eithernet card laying around put another one in that same computer and connect the other computer to it via that and then share the internet connection. That would require you to buy more cables though. That may be cheaper than buying a router though.
