i think i really did a number on my computer this time... right now i can only boot to vista, and im running on .80ghz per core (hey, i was on a long trip and i was bord...)
i dont really expect any help, cause this is pretty deap, but its funny/ pain in the @ss. anyhow, i was fiddling with an over/underclocker program i saw recommened on this forum, and since my computer sucks batteries dry, i figured id try my hand at underclocking. the program was a bit confusing, so i changed some settings, figuring i could hit the 'back to default' button if something screwed up. so now my 2.0ghz dual core is underclocked to .80ghz. to make matters worse, i was fiddling with the dual-boot options, trying to get Xp as primary boot, and Vista as secondary. big mistake. the next day i restarted my computer, went to XP, and it came up with a 'windows cannot start' error. bad, very bad. now i cant get to the software i used to underclock it. so i cant load XP, am stuck with vista running at .8ghz.
well, at least it good for battery life...
any suggestions would be great, but im not optimistic. im probably gunna put the XP installer disk in and see what i can do.
btw, the underclocking ware i used is "rightmark cpu clock utility", and the dual boot ware is "easy BCD"

Have you tried manually setting it back to 2.0 GHz using the bios? That's probably your best bet.

If you needed to get back into Windows, try using Safe Mode although I don't think you'll be able to use the program that you've mentioned.

There is also a slim chance that you may have corrupted your XP partition from messing with your boot sequence. How far does it get into Windows?

i went into BIOS, but that was no help. i havent tried safe mode, cause i honestly forgot about that (how do you get to it again? its an F button i know, but ive never seen the SM option during boot up. does vista have an SM?).
you were exactly right about the boot sequence. at the vista/xp selection screen, when i select xp, it goes straight to the 'cannot load' message, it doesnt even attempt to load. it recommends booting from the XP pro CD, and selecting the repair option, but my cousin has it, so i gotta wait till i see him again...

I actually don't know myself if Vista has a SM but I would assume they do. I always forget what key to press to get into it; you probably just hammer away at the esc, F and delete keys.

Your best bet is to use the Windows automatic repair utility but you could also try manually going into the repair console and try fixing it yourself......

haha, i tried the hammer technique for the BIOS...turns out its f10. anyhow, i shoulda found SM, cause i hammered f2, f8, f10, and delete...
i agree with your solution, its just getting the windows CD.
does anybody know if vista has a safe mode???(if so, how to get to it?)

Googled: Both Vista and XP require you to press and hold the F8 key while booting up.......

Although, you actually have to get past the part where you at to get into Safe Mode. When you get the disk, after trying the repair utility, try typing 'fixmbr' into the recovery console.........

FYI, the error page reads:

windows could not load....blah blah.

file: \ntldr

status: 0xc000000f

info: missing or corrupt entry...blah blah.

When you get the XP disk, enter into the recovery console and enter:

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

'e' being your disk drive and 'c' being your hard drive.

Also try, entering:

fixmbr
fixboot

im kinda confused about as to what to do and what it will accomplish.
anyhow, i have the cd, and i got into the recovery console, which looks alot like command promt. it asks for the admin password and i have no idea what it is, but i hit enter and it went to the "d:/windows>" thingy, which i guess is good. i typed in "fixboot" but it wants to fux with the C drive, and thats what vista is on, and of course i want that preserved. by the way, vista on C, XP on partition X, and there is a gay back up partition D.
im about to go back and try some more crap.... hope this works...:(

welp, thanks to the windows repair feature (which is was a pain in the a$$ to get to), i got XP up and running, and now my computer is running at 2.0ghz like it should be. w00t!! now all i got to do is reinstall the dual-boot stuff...not too hard, but a pain in the @$$ just the same...
a special thanks to bumble_bee_tuna!
