I have just purchased a new 400GB HDD for internal storage only. I had a 40GB in there that was working fine but wasn't required any longer. I did a clean swap using the same jumper settings, IDE cables etc. The BIOS has detected the drive and all of the master/slave configuration seems fine to me. It is recognised and working in Device Manager however I am unable to access the drive in My Computer.

Is there something I am required to do (e.g. formatting??) because it is brand spanking new???

Yes, you need to partition the HDD.

partitionmagic

No need to pay for a program when Windows does what he needs for free.

Go Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disc Management

I think from there you right click your new drive in the bottom frame, and first you have to initialize it, partition it, and then format it.

Why didn't anyone say this from the start? They asked if they needed to partition it and if someone is asking that chances are they don't know where the windows tool is to do it.

looking good so far man... it just started the format but i can already see the drive in My Computer so it seems to be working alright... thanks dude...

haha... thanks cromewell... you were right... but i think i have it sorted now... will post again if i hit any trouble...

Cheers :D

It's just a little annoying when a common problem comes by and everyone beats around the bush. Oh well, at least you've got it going.
