No, no windows applications are not compatible, you must load Linux alternatives or try using WINE which is an application that allows some windows software to be ran. The problem is that WINE can be buggy and doesn't always work out right.

No, you need Linux programs. Or, as tlarkin said you could try WINE. What are the programs you use that you want to run on Linux? I know of quite a few Open Source (free) alternatives that work on Linux.

I'm using ubuntu right now, and it's great.

You get openoffice, firefox and gaim with it.

Apt is the package manager so you can use synaptic and ubuntu has a lot of hardware support.

For a first time linuxer, i would have to recommend ubuntu.

Don't hold me to that, lol.

Reviews............ Linux is excelent, but Ubuntu is not the best Linux distro. It's good for beginners, but once you learn it you may want to switch to something like SuSE or Zenwalk.

How long does it take you to learn a new program? Can you sit down for 10-20 minutes and figure it out or does it take you hours with an instructional book? If it takes you 10-20 minutes you should be able to figure Linux out pretty quickly (I did). If you are not set on Ubuntu for sure you may want to take a look at this online Linux distro chooser.
