How can you tell if someone is on your network? And what can you do to them or them to you? Are there any programs that do something like this?
 
Does your router have a key?

Like a lot of letters and numbers to get on to?

If not, then you may have someone on your router.

Depending on your router and ISP you can check.
For me, I go to my web browser, and enter the URL in, and it shows me everyone connected.
 
get a good key like wpa-psk (wpa) and it is much harder to login. or what g4m3rof1337 said
 
Use MAC Filtering so that only specific laptops, which you specify can get the connection. :D My friend is a network admin for a school and he has some stuff that monitors that, but it is so expensive.

Just because you dont have security enabled doesnt mean people are on, especially if you live in a rural area. One way to check is to log onto your router and check the client list, and see if there are any computers listed that arent yours.

MAC filtering is a good starting point, but it's so easy to get past that. We learned how to do it in our wireless networking class last year, basically all you need to do is get a packet sniffer and find out the MAC address from a computer thats sending information to the router, then use a MAC address spoofing program to change your MAC address to that of one on the network. We did it in about 30 minutes or so on our first try, pretty interesting stuff.
 
the only way you can actually tell is to use some sort of connected device list that your router may have, or check the actuall log records on your router.

Best way to stop this is to encrypt your wireless network.

If you are not encrypted, then they can connect to your network, use your internet, read what information you are sending over the wireless airwaves and even get into your files. it all depends on how talented the hacker is.
 
there are tons of network security packages for Linux who will list all your clinets on your network, sniff all your subnets, even scripts that run brute force and dictionary attacks.

The best kind of security is layered.
