I have a bad version of windows on a 160gb hd. I have tried everything to fix it but nothing has worked. I put the hd into another computer, and I am trying to copy off my data. But I cant copy over all of my files because "accessed is denied"

I need some way to get access to my hd.

Extra info.

I have to just rma 2 sata drives which I planned to be using right now. But I need to get the data off of this one first. I put the hd into another computer and I plan on just copying and pasting all 160 gb onto a 1tb external hd. But I don't have access.

Knoppix live for cd to the rescue! A live Linux distro like Knoppix or ubuntu will easily access a stuborn drive. Several articles have recommended Knoppix live for cd for just this kind of situation. The hard drives installed on any system will appear as desktop shortcuts when booting from a live for cd distro. Knoppix and similar live versions have ready access to MS partitions whether Fat or NTFS. The other option is going for a retail software like Acronis.

Having fun with Fedora too I gather! After several downloads and burns to disk for the segments on Core 4 and getting nowhere it was the repeated attempts with the last set of disks that finally saw all files copied to the drive. It was never a bad download to blame but a stubborn installation process! Other distros like Mandriva or ubuntu fare far better and are easier to get installed and run over the Red Hat distros it seems.

Well I used to run ubuntu (back in the day before it got popular) But I need Fedora Red hat for computer engineering at Clemson university.

Once you have a good set of disks made up try a repeat install to se if all files are copied to the drive. That seems to be a hangup depending on which Core you are going with. Is that a Core 5 or newer? The problems seen here were with the older Core 4 when getting that to run. One or two files were as stubborn as a mule when trying to get those working. Remember that the Red Hat distros are more server geared over the others.
