Another Vista Issue

After I boot up there is a systen tray icon that a baloon pops up and says "Low Disk Space". Of course when I choose to clean it there is nothing to clean off. However when going to "Computer" and looking at "D" drive the bar is red and it has under it 1.78 mg free of 9.72 gb. I get this evry time I boot up. I did chat with "someone" on the help line and their fix is to reinstall the os system, not my way of fixing something when the total chat was a few minutes long, and I'm not sure who the other person was but I do know that person was in India. Can anyone shed some light on this. :confused: Thanks gk
 
Well your 10gb harddrive is not really what you want to have vista running on anyway. I would say get a bigger hd and your problem will be fixed.

The auto notification will continue to come up until there is at least 2gb of drive space free for Windows to create the paging file. Hard drive space is reserved when available for virtual memory. Apparently Vista is using that for either the paging file or for it's own backup process.

The system shows a total of 288 gig HD.This is a new Gateway machine bought in June and this is the only glitch I have had so far.

How do I fix that PC eye.?:confused:

I can live withe the auto notification and a click to make it go away but if there is another fix to stop it I would perfer to do that once and for all.

The 10gb would be the recovery partition on a prebuild which poses a problem since you want to keep that intact for any system restoration that could come up. One thing you can try is disabling the creation of new paging files to see if that helps. But it appears to be a glitch in the preinstalled OS seeing the hidden partition as the OS primary instead assuming you haven't used any partitioning program.
 
I haven't used any partitioning programs at all. I guess that means a reinstall of the OS as indicated before, that will have to wait if that is the resolve.

With that size of a drive and a new copy of Windows there only since June you wouldn't have had much time to fill the drive up unless you download or capture large video files as one example since a video file can easily be some 13gb or larger depending on length. It sounds like the preinstall saw a glitch you are now experiencing.

The first thought here would be to bring into the dealer under warranty and have them correct this for you! For simply disabling the paging file you would right click on the MyComputer icon and choose properties there. Once that comes up open the advanced tab>performance settings button>second advanced tab then seen and then the button found at the bottom of the next screen for changing virtual memory settings. Seems like a long process but it isn't.

Once there you can see if the "let Windows manage" option is set or choose to increase the size from the Windows default recommendation to something like 4gb max or simply choose the "disable creation of paging file" option found there. You can always go back in there to change it back later if that doesn't help any.
 
Ok... did that the allocation is set to "Auto" on the page filling...Minimum allowed is 16 mg...Recommened is 1339 mg..Currently at 1193 mg. I have no videos on the computer of any kind.
 
I'm under the impression that reassigning the creation of the paging file to C not the 10gb partition seen would correct this or at least going with the disable option. It sounds like the paging file is being directed at the recovery partition which is small and lacks the needed drive space. It won't hurt to run with that disabled.

Many gamers do that anyways. That will stop the prompts there. Designing the file to be created on C nor D would be the correction if that was goofed up somehow being a preinstalled copy of Windows there.

Can you not allocate more drive space to the D Partition using the administration section and taking a few gigs from the C drive and extending the D Drive?( Please correct me if I'm wrong) I had a similar problem as I use my computer for recording my music and it ran out of hard drive space and so I just added some more

If you were recording you may have simply run out of drive space there. When you go into the performance section found in the advanced tab of the MyComputer properties you can open the settings screen for the second advanced and proceed to the change button seen at the bottom of that screen.

There you can assign the swap space to one of the drives seen there if you have more then one. For a 2 drive system you would select D and then set the custom amount for the paging file there. Usually a good 4gb to 4.5gb for 2gb of ram installed for the max with 2.5gb to 3gb as the minimum.
