Home-Made Round Cables

Got a ton of those bulky, wide IDE cables laying around? Well recently I had an idea to try and make these cables into round ones to make my case look better, and it worked out great! Here is a step-by-step way to make your own, complete with pictures!

Step 1

First, take a regular IDE ribbon cable and place it on a flat, hard surface. Be sure there is plenty of light in the room. Also needed is a roll of electrical tape and either a razor blade or a very sharp knife.



Step 2
Take the knife and gently cut in between the wires in the cable, spacing cuts about 4 or 5 wires apart. Be sure not to cut into the wire itself, just cut the material in between the individual wires.



Step 3

Peel each cut down the entire length of the ribbon cable.



Step 4

Bunch up all the strands together, and wrap it tightly with the electrical tape, be sure to get it 3-4 layers thick.



Then simply plug it in any enjoy all that empty space! :D

Thats cool but i would have left off the blacktape, what you need is some cable wraps from an auto store. as that tape gets older and the fact that it stays warm it will start to come unstuck and leave sticky black crap on your cables and anything else it gets against.

but good job anyway

Hasn't happened yet, and these cables have been in my case now for over 6 months. The cable wraps is a good idea, but I'm just going on what a normal person would have in their house. I'd rather simply buy a round cable than going to an auto store and buying cable wraps.
 
Eh.. you start out with an white ribbon, in the end the top that is not covered is black... ????

Truthfully though, I LOVE IT. It looks ABSOLUTELY great! I love the tape part, love it black too! Great job!

lol I was hoping nobody would notice;):D Thats an already completed one from my case, since I didn't have any more electrical tape to use for the white cable:P

Slacker... when I used to make mine I cut apart every single wire. :P

Also, I think electrical tape works fine. I still have the ones I made like 3 years ago and they never came apart.
 
talking about cut cables. does all the cables/wires get used? i have one that i jus realised has one or 2 wires cut. but it works fine.
