is my mobo dead?

I just bought a new motherboard (m2n-e sli) packaged with a processor (amd athlon 64 x2). However, after making all necessary connections and double and triple checking to make sure they're right, I get a high pitched squeal from my power source whenever I attempt to turn it on. I know the power source is not defective because I used it on my previous computer recently. Is there some problem I'm not seeing or is my mobo dead? Any help would be appreciated.

High pitched sound coming from the PSU means your PSU is the problem, not the motherboard. I suggest buying a new one.

This is the most probable solution. Try testing you PSU on a know working system that you don't mind losing. I know they're hard to come by for most people but just in case.

If you think the PSU is definitely fine, take the mobo out of the case and put it on a static-free surface. Reconnect just the PSU and front panel buttons. Power it on and see if it makes a difference. If not, cut off the power immediately to prevent damage to the mobo. In a case like this it's likely that a broken PSU may have further damaged the mobo and maybe even some other parts. Test them all.

Ok I understand the squeal part, now, does the psu power on the system? Or are you turning it off right away before it has a chance to power the system because it freaks you out.

It could be the fan. Maybe when you installed it you tweaked the psu causing the fan to hit the inside of the psu case. Or the bearing for the fan is going out. But a psu squealing is not a common thing. Other than the fan there is not anything that can make a noise like that.

Unless of course a capacitor is about to explode.

I have tested the psu on another system and the system powers up fine. I also went ahead and used the psu on an older mobo and the system powered up without a squeal. Also used an older psu that i used on my last computer with my new mobo and I got an odd clicking sound from that psu. Even tested the old psu on another system and it powered up fine.

Sounds like it is tripping a circuit breaker inside the psu. Just a guess, but the motherboard is the problem, sounds like something is shorted out. Are you sure you put the Motherboard stand offs in the right place? Some times there are extra holes in the motherboard, but if you put a screw in it, it will short the board out.

Your advice solved my problem paratwa, thank you. Though there are no extra holes in this particular motherboard, upon removing the screws I noticed I did something very stupid and screwed the screws in too tight, which caused the short. Thank you, and please, dont heckle me too harshly.

I just encountered another problem (seems to be the story of my life). Whenever I power up my computer, it shuts off after about 5-10 seconds leaving me no time at all to even enter bios setup.

Edit:

Just tinkered around a bit and now the mobo led lights up like it did when the computer would at least start up... except now the computer doesn't even start up.
