What do you think of this setup. I'm looking to spend around $1000. I already have a nice flat panel. These are newegg.com item numbers. Should I get an extended warranty with any of these? Thanks for your input. Mike

IMO, I would not buy the WD Raptor 150GB. I think it is too expensive. I would rather just get a Rapor 36GB with a normal 400-500 GB HDD for storage. By the way, I have heard there was Problem about WD Raptor, Nvidia G80 with Vista few months ago. Don't know if WD fix it or not.
An alternative suggestion is run RAID0 for faster performance.

GPU: I would go for 8800GTS instead.

Case: Just to let you know COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 have 2 x 120mm fan included. Very similar to COOLER MASTER Centurion 5.

Wow, thanks for all your help. I'll check out that case. Any particular 8800gts? Not sure about the memory. Can you please help me out. Corsair 520? DDR2??

Thanks
Mike

2 fans are included in that case. 1 x 80mm front fan 1 x 120mm rear fan.

The don't think the ram you selected will work on that motherboard. It is 2.3v 5-5-5-9. The motherboard calls for 1.8V DDR2. You might want to look at the Qualified Vendors List (QVL). Located at the link I am going to provide.

Usually the motherboard will automatically adjust to the right voltage, otherwise, like in my 2600's motherboard, you can adjust the memory voltage in the BIOS.

There really aren't any difference between the 8800gts 320mb's, besides the clock speed. I usually just look for the cheapest one. You can also look for the best warranty. As for the powersupply, the Corsair 520watt unit is very nice.

Should I get the quad or duo core processor. Would you get this Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Conroe 3.0GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - instead of the quad core?

^Depends on what you're going to do. If you do not need the clock speed of 3ghz then get the quad core, it's more future proof. However, currently for most games the E6850 will perform better due to the fact that not many games can actually utilize 4 cores yet.

Not much of anything supports quad cores, unless you are going to use photoshop or some top level video editing software.

Get the dual core and you can upgrade to the quad at a later date.

I have a 8600GTS, and it works perfect. I don't see the point in getting the 8800 series. The clock isn't very high unless you get the 8800Ultra, which is very expensive.

If you get a 8600GTS, the core clock is 675. I overclocked mine by 10%, and it works perfect for all games.

You don't need 756MB of memory and 364 or whatever bit, that's just too much.

That's just my opinion.

you obviously don't play demanding games, plus its not just the increase in memory that makes the 8800 series a far far far superior card

and a 8800gs has 320 bit memory, which will play any game 5 times better than 128bit memory of your 8600. The only reason to get a 8600 is if your cheap and need to save 100 bucks and you cant do it any where other than the gpu, but for 130ish there are much better cards out there other than the 8600

Only game I play that uses alot of graphics is Counter-Strike: Source. And it plays that like a charm.

Anyhow, 8600gts is far faster than a 8800gts. 8800 series runs hotter also.

Its not just about clock speed its also about processing power the 8800gts and 8800gtx have 96 and 128 stream processors respectively while the 8600gts has 32 SP's only. Its that difference in processing power that makes the 8800 series cards stronger performers.

But at least compared to cards that had fixed processing pipelines the 8600gts is probably a similar if not better performer.
