how good is AVG?

Is it like Norton good? Im tired of paying for Norton but if anyway possible, would like to get the closest to it for free...

I downloaded AVG and its working just fine, but is it comparable to Norton?

I prefer Avast! Home Edition, which is 100% free.. and it comes with daily updates.

I've found Avast! Home Edition to be extremely reliable.. however, I never much cared for AVG.
 
AVG is a great program, and helps provide excellent protection when paired with Checkpoint's ZoneAlarm as the firewall (free also). Compared to Norton it's even better; resource wise it's more efficient and also provides better protection.
 
I like the new norton 2007 anyhows, i tried installing AVG at work but most of the time it wont update,since we have major drops in the network,the update fails and plus i cannot update it manually.
i think i made a thread sometime ago about not being able to update offline, but if you have a good internet speed AVG will do fine
 
You can update it manually can't you?Don't you just double click on the icon in the task bar click on anti virus and then go update and you can choose to update from the net or a folder.

And theres daily updates as well, when I get home turn on the PC it updates at startup, once a day.

bump, you didn't understand my post.
For me, manual is not going to AVG center and clicking update, manual is going on the internet downloading an update file (from avg site), open up avg and select update from file.
i need this cos our bandwidth is bad so we can't download nearly anything.
I have to go home use my internet to download the update (.bin file)
then get back to work and update the AVG's one by one using local folder
For no apparent reason that wont work for me.

AVG is probably the best free antivirus. It's not that good with updates as Norton, but c'mon NORTON uses too much of ram!!!!!!! So if you want to save some $$$ AVG is the way to go.

yeah i do agree that norton uses ram but its different with Nortonn AV 2007 its lighter and faster.
when i started work back in 2005 norton updates was 10mb, now its 17mb ..wtf ?
they really need to find a way to shrink that file

Norton is odd, when my dad's old PC died he took my old Celeron and installed Norton 2007 and it was even more rubbish than before as it got even slower. However installing Sophos improved it (we get it free from the NHS). And yes, the update definitions are odd considering AVG updates are only about 400kb max in size.

dude CELERON ain't worth the dime.
since we have the hardware to run norton 2007 it aint a problem, but celeron ?

Well it was from 2004 and it was only acting as a stand-in as he works from home a lot. Now it's owned by another member on this forum. It was replaced by his new Mesh that has Kasperky now which did have Norton as the orignal plan was to use Sophos but they're really slow doing a new version. Bit of an improvement as it's got an E6400.
