I've just got a dell precision laptop. I don't know much about the specifications but im on windows xp. The first thing I tried to do was install 'musicmatch jukebox' for my mp3 player but at the end of installation it comes up with the message "This device requires service pack 1 or later. Please install service pack 1" It happened when installing the mp3's device manager too. I've never come across the message before. Also on "My Computer" when my mp3 player is connected it either comes up as a camera (with no properties and nothing to explore) or doesn't show up at all. Does anybody know what might be wrong or how I can fix this?

can you tell us what version of XP you are running (home, pro, media center). also, how old is your computer?
windows XP has two service packs for it. most new computers with xp already have "sp2" installed. if it turns out that you dont have it, go to the microsoft website and download it.

You obviously don't have the neccessary service pack installed on your machine.

Do you have automatic updates on?

you can easily check the version of xp you have by right clicking on My Computer, click on Properties and the General tab will tell ya what version of xp you have and the sp installed....

Another thing I would like to know thought is some basic laptop care tips... I'm hearing different things... e.g when i'm not using the laptop should i keep it plugged in overnight or is it best to unplug it as long as the batterys full (i never use the battery on its own though). Also I tend to use it for long periods of time and was worried about it overheating on its own. Is this likely?

overheating, i doubt it. ive heard that you should "exercise" your battery to keep its life span from decreasing over time. to do this, just unplug your laptop, and run it till its close to dead, then plug it up again. i also have heard that leaving the battery in while plugged for long periods (i.e. over night, or weekend) will decrease battery life over time, so when not in use, it wont hurt to shut it down.

If you at home and can plug to the main, I would suggest you take out the battery.
