Making an ISO of my HDD

I would like to make an ISO of my hard drive for backup reasons, is this possible with MagicISO? I don't feel like paying $50 for Norton's Ghost when I can do the same thing with a little know-how. If possible, then how?

Thanks

nowadays you can only ghost hard drives to hard drives not to ISO, reason for this is because iso will probably run while windows is up, some some very protected system files wont be able to copy.
why not make a HD to HD backup ?

I was going to compress this on an older HDD and use it if I ever had to... You sure this isn't possible... Then, what does Norton Ghost do?

sure it is possible, get a live cd of linux and have both hard drives in. then lets say the hd you want to backup is hda1 and the other is hdb1. just do
Code:
dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/hdb1

actually the main point of this thread was that he wanted HD to ISO
so i told him its a bit not possible

it also includes backing up to cd/dvd roms but you can't put an OS on a cd/dvd rom
lol

We ghosted all of the computers in High-school, like if we got in different models, we would make a universal Ghost copy for them.... I helped the network admin and IT ppl do it, I got paid $10/hr, which was decent in high school

nice, can you give me some money now ?:P:P

Yes, I just want to back up my HDD on something smaller than another HDD until I get another HDD, make sure and read that sentence twice, it's confusing.

so what can be smaller than a HDD,a dvd-r ? a usb device ? another smaller hard drive..depends !!

same thing as Acronis true image just clones to hard drive nothing else

Norton Ghost can make an image of your hard drive and store it as an image file, which can be transfered via CD, DVD, hard drive, flash drive, etc, (as long as the device can hold that much information).

wow, i didn't know it can make IMAGES, then again the only location to store that huge image is on a hard drive...unless the person wanted to backup files only, not the OS

No, we backed everything up to a bootable CD with Ghost... Are you guys sure there isn't another way?
