Rsstore MBR in Vista Basic OEM

I installed a second HDD tonight and install Vista Ultimate on it.. and the new install changed the MBR on my original HDD.

I played with Ultimate enough and now I want to stick to basic Vista.. I've removed the IDE HDD and the MBR still asks which version of Vista to boot..

How do I restore the MBR on my HDD?

The version of Vista on this drive is OEM.. so I don't have an install disc.
 
I don't have one of those, either.. my copy of XP Home is also OEM haha.

Would a DOS disk (floppy, 1.44MB) work? If so, which version should I download to use (from bootdisk.com)?
 
Start a console prompt and run 'bcdedit /enum all' (windows vista), then use bcdedit /delete {ugly-long-id-of-startup-menu-you-dont-want}

I'm sorry.. consider me noob, but, what exactly should I do here?

The problem I have is that when I boot up my PC, I'm given the option to load either of the two versions of vista installed.. one version on each HDD.. but the Vista Ultimate (v2, not the one I want to keep) is on a HDD that isn't installed anymore..

By console prompt, do you mean an elavated command prompt? If so, do I do it within Vista?

From there, (with C:/windows/system32 up) I just type bcdedit / enum all

Yes, the console is just a command prompt. When you use /enum all you will get a list of all the entries in your boot menu, look for the one that is on the hard drive you no longer have and delete it's guid (that big long number). You can use /export to back it up before hand and /import to put it back.

I typed it as I saw it
 
It was successful.. but the dual boot vista option still appears when I boot up the PC

or you could do this (i've had to do this many times)

Put your vista dvd in and restart computer. When it restarts, hit f12 (maybe f8, or f2 depending on the manufacturer) and choose "boot from cd"

Once the files from the cd are loaded, go to System Recovery, and then comand prompt. Type "Bootrec.exe /Fix Mbr"

and thats it. It should be fixed.
 
All I have is the Anytime Upgrade disc and a backup/restore disc I created through Acer Empowering software..
 
I used the Anytime Upgrade disc, as it's got all 32bit version of Vista on it.. and I did what you suggested, it was successful, but the Windows Boot Manager (just after I turn on the PC) still shows that other version of Vista as an option to boot.. if clicked, it says it's nowhere to be found (because the HDD it resides on is uninstalled at the moment)..

If I click on this version of Vista (basic, the version I want to keep) it loads up fine.. but I want that message gone =(

I fixed it doing this;


bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
c:
cd boot
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd


Using recovery console on the Anytime Upgrade disc..
