RAM worth the $

Yep I'm a noob.

I'm looking to upgrade RAM from 512 to 1 GB.

I'm running a P4, Windows XP desktop for MS office, internet, email, & music. No games.

I have an 800 FSB board and 4 RAM slots (dual channel)

Currently I have 2 x 256 DDR 2700

Should I:

1) buy another 2 x 256 DDR 2700 for $36

2) buy 4 x 256 DDR 3200 for $72

3) buy 2 x 512 DDR 3200 for $58

Which would be the best performance & value for the $ ?

You can buy 1 x 1GB for $50 at newegg.com. That is what you want. BUT be sure that you're getting the right type. DDR2 (240-pin) or DDR (184-pin). They are not interchangeable.

if it supports dual channel (which i'm guessing is a no) you could get the same 512 chip or get 2x1gig for like 60-70 bucks... which i think is your best way to go... 2 gigs is a good amount of ram to have. what speed does your mobo support?

I would go with option 3 but since it's just a general use machine, adding 2 more PC2700 256MB sticks is probably fast enough and it will get you to 1GB for the least cash, so it's your call on which of those 2 you would prefer. If you plan on putting Vista on your computer at some point I would take option 3 that way you can move to 2GB without replacing any RAM if 1GB isn't enough (which for a lot of people it's not)
