Newb with a HDTV as monitor question.

Hello all-

I am trying to hook up my HDTV (54") up as a monitor while I am working from home recovering from knee surgery. I just bolstered up my old dektop (completely rebuilt it almost). I put in a GeForce 7300 GS graphics card with a DVI output in order to connect it to my TV with a DVI input. I hooked it to my TV DVI input (input 1) via a Monster Cable DVI400 cable. It has DVI inputs on both ends. I was expecting a much better picture than I got from the S-Video connection I was using, instead, I have a black screen and the TV acts like it isnt even recognizing the DVI Input connection. It still says YPBPR for the input for input 1. Any suggestions??? :(

Welcome to computer forum

do you have your resulation too high?

also good luck with the recovery

Thanks. The resolution is the same as it was when it was hooked up via S-Video, so I would assume its fine. I am not sure, I could hook the S-Vid back up to find out but I am guessing the res is something like 1280x768. Or something around there. I will hook the S-Video up and try bringing it down.

I set it to 800x600 and hooked the DVI cable back up just to give it a whirl and still nothing. The computer was just completely rebuilt and reloaded with XP today. I am wondering if something is up with the graphics card or something, its doing this insane static flashing thing when I try to make setting changes to the graphics and the like?!?!

ok if you right click on the desktop and go to properties and setings. above where the resulation there should be a pull down menu. what does it have in there and what one is slected

I think its a problem with your tv not being configured correctly. Ypbpr is a red-green-blue colored cable, obviously not DVI. See if you can screw around in your tv settings to get it to be DVI. (Some sources say radeon's old card's dvis were ypbpr but you have an nvidia so I dunno about that).

EDIT: Oh, latest graphics drivers?

I am not sure about the latest graphics drivers, I was assuming since it was just installed today, I guess I can try and check it out...

Should this card do OK for me? I am not trying to do any gaming or DVD from the setup, I mainly need to be able to draft efficiently in AutoCAD on it. Which, I was having a tough time doing with the S-Video conenction. I think a lot of it was b/c the screen was stretched and whatnot. Anyone have some suggestions as far as settings for when/if I get it working? Thanks.

I was trying to update them, Im a newb. I cannot find anywhere to update them, please point me in the right direction...

OK, I let Windows search for a better driver but it did not find one, is there something else I should try?

I looked up the TV info, its a Hitachi 50V500 50" (not 54). Here is a link to all the specs. Now, I need to find a manual...

Is there a difference between my DVI output on my computer graphics card and the DVI-HDTV input on my TV?

Could this be the issue?!?! even though my Vid card has a DVI output is it sending out a compatible signal? Can I get these settings out of the card? How?

well that is confusing it sounds like it will not work but the dvd part throughs me away. weard.

In your nvidia control panel (oh shoot, its been a while since this so bare with me) but there is a change resolutions link somewhere, make sure you have the monitor thats hooked up to the tv at the resolution of 1920x1080. I think nvidia can tell when you have a TV plugged in and it will have that be set as "hd 1080i" or something. Click around, play in the tv settings, but Im pretty sure that manual is wack.

I was just looking at the specs for the video card. here: http://www.xpcgear.com/n73gshtd256.html

It lists much much higher resolutions than I am currently allowed to select on the computer. I have yet to go set up it up on regular monitor, I may do that and see what I can find.

It also mentions the DVI out as DVI-I, is this a specific cable? Is the one I purchased not compatible? Also, would this be a different DVI inout cable than what my TV will accept? The connection on the card looks like its made to fit different types of DVI cables (some have pins around the blade) whereas the TV will not accept pins around the blade. My DVI cable does not have pins around the blade- does this make it not DVI-I?

I am just throwing stuff out there guys, I obviously have NO clue, just trying to figure it out....
