I have an old school sony vaio pcg-fxa63. I have no s-video output but there is a monitor out, a serial out, and i believe there is a 1/8 inch video out as well.I have typical red/white/yellow inputs on my plasma and an s-video input on my plasma. How can I hook the laptop to the plasma to watch movies that i purchase online? The laptop has an ati mobility video card. can anyone help me? I wanna know what cables I can use to get the best quality.

DO NOT use VGA to RCA. As far as I know that only works with certain cards. Besides, the quality would be horrible.

If you want the "best" quality, you need to use VGA or DVI, depending on what your laptop has and TV supports.

time out, Mr. KnowItAlls, you forgot the easiest way to do it: my brother has a sony laptop as well, and he uses the 3.5mm (1/8in) video/audio out. you can get one of those cords for about $25 at radio shack, ect.

So if he only has that how would you do it Mr. Know it all.

If the laptop has TV-Out(which is probably does) he could use either SVHS/RCA, depending on the plug. If he doesn't, then he'll have to use VGA/DVI as I mentioned. Audio would be through 3.5mm to RCA.

Standard TV video is interlaced. PC video is not. Anything going over RCA or SVHS must be converted to interlaced video for the TV to "understand" what's being sent.

I've not seen anything like that... I know Sony has something that explorts A/V using a type of 3.5mm cable on their camcorders, but I can't recall seeing one on a laptop...

Do you choose to not read posts or is it out of your ability to do so? His TV doesn't have DVI / VGA input and his laptop doesn't have TV-Out.

Hmm maybe if I read the post I would know that he listed what outputs his laptop has....

well, they do, as he mentioned in his original post. to clarify, both video and audio come from the same 3.5mm port. i think the iPod video uses the same type (not sure, dont have one). if its a Viao, the ring around the port should be yellow in color. it really is your best and simplest bet (i wish my computer had one). like i said, you can find em at radio shack or here.

sorry to jump on you, but he said he does have video out, in 3.5mm form. read the post
and your post is a little bit confusing

thanks everybody!

Thanks everyone for helping me out. Sorry if there was confusion about my post. I think the link that luckeyedboy sent me will work. I do have the yellow output 1/8 jack on the side of the comp. It looks like a monitor with an arrow pointing out of it. I also have a mic output there, a headphone jack, and an s400 output. not sure what that is for. That cable you suggested would go into the yellow tv/ out correct. Thanks for all the help. I can be a dumb ass sometomes.

what you described sounds right for an older sony, and, according to my brother, the s400 jack is a mini firewire. and yes, the cable i linked goes to the yellow plug, and is for A/V out. should work like a charm.
