please explain the ip address

i know what a ip address is. its like a street address for your computer.

but is there any thing special about the ip address over a network.

i am runny a crossover cable network.
desktop laptop
the ip's are 101.102.103.104 and 100.100.100.104

is there something wrong with these ip address they wont connect and windows cant make its own. it let and it comes up with limited or no connectivity error.
 
well i think the only thing you can change is the last digets. so like 100.100.100.1 and 100.100.100.2
 
got it thank you. yall know any good websites for networking info.i am in the milatery and after basic i am going to make networking my major in colleage and i need to learn as much as possibale.in like 4 months.
 
this is going to be stupid but i am doing it for the experence.

how do you set up a dialup network. i have netzero as my isp i want to let it run to my other computer.

internet conetion. desktop laptop

i want to have the desktop connected to the internet and network it to where the laptop can get on at the same time with the one connecation.

is this possibal if so how do you do it???
