New monitor?

I currently have a 17inch CRT that I am tiring of and am thinking of getting a nice LCD. I would of course opt for a 22-24 inch but I dont know if I will get good frames in games in the insane 1680*1050 resolution.

Current specs,
AMD 3700+
7600 gt pci oc
1 gig-o-ram

I feel I get good frames in newer games such as MOH and Bioshock (probably around the 30's-50's) With everything high at my current resolution of 1152*864. Unfortunately my monitor doesnt support higher than that so I cant test and see what kind of frames Ill be getting at 1680*1050

So if I were to go big(22inch) what kind of performance hit would I receive? Should I stick with a nice 19inch? Should I go normal(4:3/5:4) or widescreen(16:9)?

:)

Im not asking "What company of monitor should I get?" Im asking "What size of monitor should I get based on my specs and I want to use the native resolution and get good frames in games?"

:D

Well i would go for 22" if it's possible 24" even like this one , btw i haven't heard of anything extremely good of X2GEN and you might want 2ms, 5ms is still ok but you'll notice some ghosting

Im not to worried about seeing ghosting with 5ms response time. But I was just in counter strike source and I decided to play around and see how high I could get the resolution, which turned out to be 1280*1024. This isnt too much bigger then what Im already using. So if this is the max, whats the point in buying another monitor for 1680*1050 if (excluding my graphics card cant handle it) but the game cant even handle it that high!?

Should I perhaps save my cash and buy something else instead?

No CS:S handles higher rez but it detects that your monitor cant go any higher so it lowers the max resolution...

I would say go with the 20" it will only be a bit of a loss in FPS.

If your looking for resolution and dont mind a crt I would just scan local listings like craigslist or something and fine someone handing the darn things out. Full Hi-Def resolutions on some of those 20+ inch crt's.

If you need more "space" then go for the bigger 22" lcd or something of the like. Any Widescreen lcd is going to surpass that max res for CS that you mentioned so no point worrying about that...if you get one your looking at minimum of 1440x900 in most cases for the smaller lcd's.

edit: Someone smack me I know, I havent played cs:s... ... ...But its based on the source engine so it should be able to play 1680x1050, every other source game ive played handles it fine if I remember correctly.

If you need more Visual space go for it. Or more desk space or whatever. But dont just go for the lcd because of a higher resolution because you can get a crt to do that for a sliver of the pricetag.

And yes, your 7600 is going to take a hit going from the smaller resolution to the higher one. I went from 1024x768 and took a hit. Not huge, but still a noticeable hit. Now I want a new card hehe

I'd say go take a look at some nice LCD's in a store and play around with them, and then decide if they are what you want.

I am going dual 22" so, you could see what happens with me... I am not going just for gaming, but all the PS work I am doing lately, Work and Hobby....

Ya, I have a single 22" monitor and two 7600gs' and I did notice a hit in performance, its inevitable when upping the resolution, but I love the 22" monitor.

And Im sure that you Intel, will love your 2 22" as well.

One thing I can tell you with the bigger monitor. Once you get used to it. Everything else seems very tiny!

I have the Gateway 22" lcd. The only reason I bought it was because

1. It had composite inputs for the xbox 360 i bought at the time, and do not have anymore lol. Returned the xbox but couldnt return the monitor lmao.

2. Its made by samsung and not gateway lmao.

3. Employee discount got me a good amount off the monitor from best buy.

I used to have a 20inch crt, but it had stabilizing lines though it, couldnt stand it. Most on craigslist are going to be older models with the lines ya?

The higher resolution bit is not for more screen space, infact, I am perfectly content with my current resolution. But thats not how large lcd's are, and if Im getting an lcd, might as well get a large one.

The biggest reason to get would be for more desk space. Also, I absolutely hate my crt's settings. I can never get the image square on the screen. My start bar is cut off, or the scroll bar is half on half off, etc.

The nearest wally world is too cheap to plug their monitors into actual computers, they just have cardboard displays. Ive gamed on a friends 15inch 12ms and that was kinda interesting/fun.

Ill ponder it a few days Nighttrain.

99F, yes I was most definitely leaning toward a 20inch, The first one I linked above,

Did I mention new desk? Dual 22"s just aren't gonna work on this thing... Plus I have gotten board and took screw drivers and stabbed holes in it:rolleyes: I am gonna get a glass one...
