Water + Laptop

Ok here is the case....

My sister is down at Texas Tech University for college. Tonight someone pulled the fire alarm in her dorm, causing the sprinklers to come on and soak everything in sight. Well, her brand new $1200 lappy was in her dorm room, and it is likely very wet to say the least. Can a laptop survive exposure to a fair amount of water? Should it be dried out before she attempts to turn it on?

Sometimes you can get lucky after something like this, But the answer is let it dry out for a week or so before testing it. If she can open the back of the laptop to help it dry out all the better, but tell her not to try turning it on for at least a week.

It all depends on if it was running at the time. If nothing shorted out, then it might run.

Alright she just called and said she recovered her laptop, she said there was water on the topside where the company logo was, but the keyboard and underside was dry. It was running at the time though, but she shut it off. I told her to open it up and let it air dry.

Was the laptop shut ? I would suggest removing the CMOS battery too.. Get an hair dryer and put it by the laptop. should be quicker that way.

You also have to think of the hundreds of other kids' laptops and TV's and DVD players and iPods and anything electronic which got soaked.... it's a HUGE mess.

Oh I would be pissed off badly, if some idiot drenched my PC, which I wouldn't take this one to college anyway. This guy better watch out, they will beat the crap outta him and the pranks will never end. I would torment him forever, I might even 'Penny Lock' his door. That would really agonize him....

I knew a guy once that was sleepwalking... he dreamed his laptop was on fire and sleepwalked over to it and poured water all over it... lol

It fried beause it was in sleep mode at the time and not powered off.

I know around here if you set off or pull a firealarm because of smoking the college i went to i never lived in the dorms but my fiancee did and they were warned if you set it off you are responsible for all of the damage to the building and anything inside it. A kid did this almost 4 years ago and had to replace over 50k in tv's and comptuers his insurance wasnt to happy with him...
