I am in a market for video cards for my bro's computer and I came across these two cards. My XFX performs similar to 8600gts when heavily overclocked, so I just though 8600gt is good enough. But 7950XT is a totally different story. it only supports dx9, but it kills the 8600 into the dust. Which one should i get? I am thinking about 8600gt only because it has dx10 capabilities (but we use xp). Thank you.

Get a 8600gts instead. Almost as great as a 7950, but DX10, whether that will work or not I don't know but Price difference is nothing so...

yes indeed. Mine has better score than 8600gts with E6750 with OC. I could push my processor more, but i will try that later this week.

Besides, he's talking about the 8600GT which is even worse. And getting either one because of DX10 is pointless, because as I said, the 8600 cant play the games on high enough settings to notice the difference between maxed out DX9 or medium DX10.

Besides you don't know the GTS will perform poorly in real Dx10, no one does.
Bioshock is an example. I play It maxed with my 7600gt. A gts should be able to do the same in Dx10 mode. Bioshock may not be a "true" dx10 game but it still utilizes it. Even crysis is able to scale down to play on 3 year old computers, according to the devs, that implies some mighty nice coding. So the Dx10 ability of the GTS will be decided by the devs, whether or not they'll make a dx10 game that's streamlined or not.
Also the 8600gt is nearly as great as the Gts when overclocked, as the guys above pointed out. So it's still got some hidden potential.

DX10 is a lot more demanding then DX9. When playing games such as Lost Planet, or some of the other games with a DX10 patch, the framerate dropped by almost 50% in all games when they enabled DX10 using an 8800GTS, and the framerates were around 20-35FPS, but I believe it was with maxed out settings.
The 7950GT is quite abit better card than the 8600GTS. The 8600GTS is alot closer to the 7900GS overall.

Lost Planet was originally a Dx9 360 game. They just tacked on a unoptimized DX10 and Blew up texture size. And all the Dx10 patches were the same. The devs just just threw it on. No wonder performance sucked.
Still though, that's probably what Dx10 is going to be, untweaked. Until Valve or someone comes along and shows the noobs how it's really done, perfect graphics bundled with a well coded engine. Wait till someone actually know and cares what they're doing, then we'll see that Dx10 is a monster at all, it's just that the devs can't, or haven't yet, Researched and tested the new format. Crytek is doing this, I believe you can play the dx9 version in all it's glory with a 7900gs or a 7950gt, and Dx10 not far from a 8800gts or similar.
