IP Address

I was trying to port forward so my utorrent would download faster and followed the instructions at www.portforward.com but it didn't work. Then I realized that if I go to command prompt and go to ipconfig /all it says my ip address is 192.168.0.something and when I go to portforward.com it tells me my ip is 24.222.something.something I don't remember exactly and its not that important but why are they different at all? and in completely different forms? How should I set up my port forward. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

well in ipconfig it tells me my gateway ip and its 192.168.0.1 i think but i know its dif than the ip it said i was running on and the ip that portforward and other sites gave me was just totally different

ip config tells you your lan side of your ip address but portforward.com is telling you your wan address look on wikipedia to find out the difference

Edit: do you have a static Ip address assigned to your computer?

yea i did all that but when i go back to portforward it says my address is like 24 222 whatever... even tho in ipconfig /all it tells me its what i set my static ip to which was a 192 168 format i don't get it

I already explained it in this post

ok i'm on my lappy now and trying to port forward through the wireless router that we have plugged into our router that brings the internet in.... same deal. I set a static ip up as 192 168 1 136 (before i had an auto assigned) went through the whole thing and then when i test the port it tells me my ip is like 24 225 something something... i don't get it because I can't even change the 192 168 1 in the router settings to allow for an ip address of the for 24 225 to be port forwarded... nobody's ever seen anything like this?

Really what you want is a feature called static DHCP, which will lease the same IP address to a MAC address on your network. Then you can port forward and set the proper port in your torrent client. This also does not make you disable the DHCP server option from your router.

You have a WAN ip, which is leased to you from your ISP. Your router assigns your private network a set of non route able IPs, and then translates the connection between them.

Also, running static DHCP allows all other clients connecting to your network the ability to lease an IP. Lets say your friend comes over and wants to use his laptop, you can give him the encryption passkey to your WiFi and then he can connect and be on your network via DHCP; or you can manually set everything up. DHCP makes it a lot easier.
