Ram speeds on laptops

If my memory is at 400mhz, does that mean i have to buy 400mhz memory? or if i buy a faster memory it will down clock itself to work with my laptop?

I wouldn't rely on it reverting to a slower speed. If the memory is not supported by your mobo it may not even boot. Generally if you have two supported speeds it will operate at the slower speed, but not always.

Technically it should clock down the the correct speed. However, so many times I have tired say PC133 RAM in a PC100 system and it wouldn't work...

DDR400 is so common, I doubt you'd be able to find anything else faster for less. Not unless it's DDR2, which won't work in your laptop.
