Total newb, want to build for minor video editing, music, basic stuff

i'm totally new to the concept of building my own computer. i know basically nothing about putting one together. i would like to build a system that i can do basic stuff with like using the internet and what not. Also doing minor video editing (home movies). Store lots of music. Thats basically what i would use my computer for. I would be keeping this comp for at least 5 years

My price range would be anywhere from $700-$1100
I have the basic stuff lying around like an old monitor and keyboard (can rob an A drive from an old computer)

one guy i work with said to look on tiger direct for a barebones kit and go from there.

he also recommended if i were editing video to get a good video card, such as ratheon.

i was thinking about getting a firewire port as well.

its been awhile since i've messed with any of this stuff.

looking for component suggestions so i can go out and buy this stuff and put it together, i really don't want to just go buy a computer.

Barebones have bad cooling which some times may lead to smoke.

A radeon isn't good Nvidia is the best. Ok for video editing a good card be a money in the bin. for stuff like these get the iMac.

If you want to build a pc then maybe

Intel Core Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 8mb Cache
2048mb 6400CL4 800MHz (CL5 would be for gamers)
Asus 680i Mobo
500GB HDD
Nvidia 7600GS 512mb or ATI Radeon X1600Pro 512mb < 512mb preformes better in video editing and games with intense graphics mapping.

Actually there isn't any difference in terms of gaming performance between the 256MB version and 512MB version of those cards

The performance of video editing depends on CPU, not video card

thanks alot guys! at least i'm starting to get in the right direction. i am still doing some reading on this site about computers in general. when ya work like 60+ hours a week ya don't get much time to research.

i don't do any gamming what-so-ever. I did some video editing when i was in highschool (circa 2003) and we just used some basic PC's with firewire and stuff like that. just wanna take home movies and be able to put them on DVD's but other than that it will be just a basic computer. I currently have a custom built comp with:

Abit mobo
AMD sempron (tm)
1.83 GHz
512mb RAM

works alright but since i still live at home and i'm about ready to buy a house of my own i would like to build my own PC.

well like i said, i have a digital movie camera and i would like to be able to capture the movies, edit them and burn them on a dvd. yeah i'd be building a begginer's comp but i would want to have it for at least 5 years before having to do major upgrades. god i must sound like a complete idiot!
 
Ah... so you want an cmoputer to last around 5 years before it gets outta date... then an Q6600 or QX would be your answer. Q6600 + 4GB RAM fits into that budget. Maybe 8800?

it is an easy build. all mapped out for you and can handle what you are wanting to do.

As far as your Operating System I would stick with XP instead of Vista. Personally I don't trust anything Microsoft comes out with for the first couple years lol. Again this is just me, but even Windows website says that XP will be up to date until fall 2009. Save yourself a hundred or so and buy a good video editing program instead of going with Vista. (Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 plus Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 is the basic software that I have.) http://www.adobe.com/products/psprelements/

Why in the world would you get an 8800 if he just wants to do video editings - its CRAZY, maybe get a 2600 xt as you may move into HD soon? Im sure a 7600gt would be very sufficient
 
yeah, i probably don't need the real high end one. also i'm not going to go with vista, my buddy also warned me about that, he just said to make sure to get the 2nd edition. yeah, i don't play any video games what so ever. i mean my sister had a sega when i was like 10 haha and played it for about an hour and gave up. i'm also the guy that doesn't watch football. go figure!

i do love to take my jeep offroad, which is expensive haha. (Just Empty Every Pocket). thanks alot guys, i'm def learning something new every day. i'm currently reading some stuff on Tom's Hardware right now!:)
 
also another question. I would like to build the computer to have the option of using firewire, what do i need to make that happen?

8800 is crazy for video editing. Either buy a really cheap card (like a 7600GS or something, or invest in a workstation card).

If you take out the expensive graphics card, 4 gigs of ram is well within in budget.

Almost all motherboards have firewire headers, and almost all half decent cases has front panel firewire. Just connect the wires and you're ready to go.
