There's No Response

I just finished building my first computer, i think i got everything right, everything plugged into the PSU, but when i first went to turn my comp on....nothing happened. I got all the right switches from my case in the MOBO, i got my 24 pin connector in my mobo; the 12 volt thingy in my mobo too, but my PSU won't even make a sound. I press the power button on my case and nothing happens. Any suggestions for troubleshooting??? Thanks a lot guys...=(

If your board has a green led for indicating power the thing to suspect there would be a bad supply if that is not seen. One thing that happened some months back however when swapping out supplies was a need to unplug and replug the 4pin 12v cpu feed.

When plugged in the second time when nothing started a feature light pressure until the click of the retainer clip was heard then saw everything come to life. You read up on that one at the thread seen at http://www.computerforum.com/80790-bad-board-simply-need-replug.html

but...absolutely nothing repsponded...like...the PSU fan didn't even start turning (is it supposed to turn when clicked on?)

The fan on the supply itself won't run until the system itself is started. That can point to a problem with the main power buttom on the case if you plugged in it correctly as another thought there. If you forgot to turn on the breaker switch on the rear of the supply that would be another reason for not seeing anything.

T_T...this is a pain...i don't know what to do, i guess i'll have to try everything...but how do i know if the PSU is a dud?

Did you look at the rear of the case to see if the breaker switch was on? That would be one thing right there to see if you simply forgot to turn that on. The other thing besides a bad supply or incorrect plugin of the front panel mini plugs would be a bad power button or switch as one cause. Or you have received a bad board.

For the experienced taking the board out and only seeing the video card. cpu, memory, and having one case fan plugged in you would take something small like a paper clip in order to jump the two power pins on the small block seen on the board itself. That would tell if you had a bad power button or plugged the power, reset, and hard drive led plugs in wrong. With the breaker on and no green led lighting up then susspect the supply.

If switching the breaker on the PSU doesn't work, see if your mobo has a power button. If it does, push it. When I built my PC, I didn't receive any power until I pushed the power button located on the mobo.

Also, you migth want to check whether your mobo is properly installed using stand-offs. The mobo might be shorted out hence the no response problem.

Grounding through the standoffs? That's a possibility. The use of non conductive thin wafer type washers usually provided along with the board will help there often.

Most newer boards won't see a power button on the board itself however. But a dead battery on the board or not making good contact if the green is seen on would be a thought too. On thought about the supply itself being bad would be to even borrow another working supply to see if the supply or board is at fault there. The green led on the board if found is the first item to see if power is actually being sent.

LOL, yea teh standoffs...this sounds really ghey....but i realized that i didn't even use dem...o.0...oh well, i typed this response using my newly built comp...so i'm ok xD

If you didn't use them, i strongly suggest you removing the motherboard and installing the brass standoffs in the correct location

Hopefully you didn't damage anything on the board and learned a good lesson to prevent any future mishaps? If you know anyone with experience around you let them lookover the next build and guide you through it. Once you build a few you will automatically start double checking yourself fast enough. :D
