Forum revealing IP adress

If I got banned on a forum and the moderator shows my ip to others publicly, does that mean the forum is invading my privacy? What can I do about it?

No one can do anything with just your IP address...

So if you really want them not to give out your IP address, send them a mail.

But it's already revealed, what good does it do? I tried restarting my modem and my ip address won't change, it used to do it before but today it won't change, do you know how to change it?

It will change when it expires.

It could be 24 hours or more or less... Don't worry, as long as you have good anti-virus and Firewall protection, nothing will happen to you. And also nothing can be done with JUST the IP address...

Thank you, I'm a bit relieved now, but when the moderator released my IP he also released my ISP provider with some numbers, will they ever find out my physical address meaning where I live?
I have zonealarm internet zone security on medium level and avg antivirus.

The only way for them to find out your real home address is if the ISP gives it to them.

There is no way to track where you are.

Will the ISP give out the info??? I did a whois and used my own IP and have some of the following info.

Comment: For Abuse Issues, email [email protected]. NO ATTACHMENTS. Include IP
Comment: address, time/date, message header, and attack logs.
Comment: For Subpoena Request, email [email protected] with "SUBPOENA" in

I worried if they email bellsouth.net and made up a fake report on me, although I never done anything but being lousy at their forum.
So if they do send the fake report they made up to bellsouth, will bellsouth shut down my internet connection?

Your ISP won't tell them your address, they might tell the FBI if you did something really illegal. But just on a forum it's nothing to worry about. :)

What if they made something up to implicate me? If they made up an attack log of my ip address attacking some government website or I heard you can use other people's computer to perform attacks and they chose me? I have zonealarm firewall, will that help?

You must of really did something stupid, to be so worried.. No they will not lie and make up stories. They will not spoof your IP and pretend like you attacked a government database, nor will they download a self propagating virus to turn your computer into a festering infection. Zonealarm will not protect you if you've done something something stupid and someone subpoena's your ISP to force them to reveal your location, but it will help to prevent anonymous attacks and unwarranted entry. Just don't worry about it, unless it was the secret forum of the Hashishin (Assassin) or something and you insulted their honor, or their mothers. XD

Thank you, I guess I don't have to worry anymore, I didn't do anything illegal. I just made up a software and post it at the other forum in the new thread as useful for the members to download and use, and I joke around that it can do some of the stuff beyond possibilities, and I encrypt this file with winrar so they are tempted to ask me for the password, and I asked them to give me at least 5 compliments before I post the password and then I posted the password and they found out it's garbage and flame me for it and the moderator ended up closing the thread with my ip address and the host name which is my ISP.
But the file is just a dummy file and useless, not like virus or whatever.

heh, ok. You're right, not illegal, though dishonest and nuckleheaded.

Beware though. On the great plane of interwebs, there exists a mysterious and quite dangerous creature referred to as "hacker". Quick to anger, and even quicker to be spurred to action, this creature knows not mercy, or pity. He is capable of ruining a perfectly enjoyable visit to the land of the interweb, and may even be compelled to infect you with a nasty strain of Virii, whether it rewrites your MBR, and turns your computer useless, or utilizes a trojan to spy and steal valuable information is not known, The hacker is very unpreditable. On the anonymous interweb the hacker is capable of hiding in plain site, thus it is a good idea to be courteous, or otherwise indisposed towards strangers.

:P

A lesson in form of jest.

NAT, by default it does not allow remote hosts to connect to your network. Most routers have it, they would have to have access to your router to tunnel through. I wouldn't worry about it. You are more likely to get social engineer anyways.

Well I see NAT/Gaming tab as an option in my router, should I turn the NAT Table Monitoring on?
And there's option for static NAT, do I enable it?
I kind of understand what you mean by social engineers, like Kevin Mitnick, well I'll never get fooled by social engineers. And I won't provide them any important informations, well for the above question about NAT I'm kind of providing some information eh?

If you have a static IP (cable ISP) and a router, you can probably change your IP by going into the router's settings, changing the last 3 digits of your MAC address, then unplugging and replugging your modem.
