I'm trying to burn a couple hours of digital video to a CD preferably or a DVD if necessary. The video is in .avi format at 640x480 resolution, and I was wondering approximately how much video at that compression I could fit on one CD or DVD. The other problem is that most programs seem to have trouble playing .avi files, sometimes playing only the audio and not the video, so I was wondering if I would need a specific program to burn the files to a CD or DVD.
 
dude, there's a lot of variables there

avi's not even a format, it's a container

and either way, to burn to a video cd (or dvd for that matter) the video would have to be in mpeg or mpeg2 format, respectively

LOL! Thats because MP3 is an audio format!

The reason you only get audio with playing .AVI files is because you need the proper codec, DivX player has the codec included.

VCD has a resolution of 352 x 240,
DVD has a resolution of 720×480,

You need a program, like Nero, to encode your file and then make it into a VCD/DVD. As for trouble playing avi files, you just need the right codecs like OMEGA said, download divx and you should be good to go.

And mp3 is audio only....so ofcourse you won't be getting any video :rolleyes:.
 
Ya, I meant MP4, I tried converting to WMV too, and either way, I only got audio. Currently the only program that will play both the audio and the video is VLC. Any ideas of how to convert it?
 
just spend the $40 for an mpeg-4 capable dvd player, and then you can just burn the file as-is to a cd and watch it on your tv

the one i use for the time being is a $39.00 toshiba from best buy, and it works great

plays dvd, vcd, svcd, kvcd, mpeg4, divx, xvid, mp3, wma, wmv, multi-audio files, and even carriers with ac3 audio

it's an awesome player for the price tag
