reasonable overclock, and will it do anything?

lovely?

well im looking to squeeze some more power out of my system in my sig, i have my 3400 OC to 2.65 GHZ but i want to overclock my X800GTO. does anyone know if they are suitable overclockers? the heatsink isnt tiny like on the nividia counterparts, but im not sure how much this thing can take..... its running, right now at 445.50 MHZ core clock and 1145.50 memory speed. and its running at 48 degrees celcius. will it do my system any good to up the juice some more? and does anyone know of cases where this card messed up from overclocking?

basically i want to know my limit before unfortunetely finding out on my own, and if it will do any good

EDIT: after running a small benchmarking tool, my temperature jumped to 56 degrees celcius. im sure that its ok, but how much farther can i push it?

hey guys i think i found my limit!!! i know it was my video card because i could do things like i normally would, i alt-tabbed out of eve online (fun multiplayer game by the way, but not so great 1 player (no buddies) ) no lag, just this :

i was kinda scared when that started happening, but then i realized that i could still partially see, so i opened up my temperature-reader, in this case ati tray tools, and it only read 57C... hmmmm what was wrong????

You are using ATI Tool correct? When you overclock you need to have it on "scan for artifacts", and then slowly raise up one speed at a time. Once you see yellow spots in the artifact window, then back it down. Raising the speeds without any kind of load test is stupid.

i c be right back

omega your a godsend! ok at my current stock clocks it was totally stable (duh) now im gonna ramp it up till i see white smoke, or in other words my computer surrendering lol

hey i just figured out that neat 'find max for' feature. you click the 'show 3d renderer' button and then find max for gpu (core speed) and then memory. that also scans for artifacts the whole time, then it balances the speeds out so im left with my max safe overclock with 0 artifacts. one question now, can i trust it???

EDIT: just his 70C while auto-overclocking, i think im gonna stop unless anyone thinks i should ramp up the core clock, its only 420MHZ while the memory is 1022MHZ. i was clocking up the memory when it hit 70C

It's a pretty cool feature, it will even downclock the speeds once it sees artifacts, and if it locks up it will tell you upon boot the highest stable speed. Once it finds the max speeds, I would scan for artifacts manually to.

As for the temperature, 70C is perfectly fine.

452.76MHZ core clock

1017.68MHZ mem clock all stable, i'd call it a nice adventure, sure as hell scared me lol thanks for all the help. oh, and in a game, will this even matter? lol

I wouldnt worry about it, as long as you dont have it load those speeds at startup, then if your screen gets messed up like it did before, it will be fine once you restart.

I dont remember the stock speeds off the top of my head, but if it's a pretty decent overclock, you should notice a difference.

thats great, because for some reason i have had to turn down age of empires off of max with full AA and AF awhile back, i dunno why. thanks, peace
