Hello: I have an older notebook which will need replacing soon. I primarily use my laptop for internet, word processing, syncing my palm TX, itunes, pictures, and some other small programs. I do not use my notebook for gaming or any intensive applications. I have been reading lots of mixed reviews on Vista. Should I try to get a machine with XP (I am currently running XP Pro on my Dell Inspirion and have had no problems) or go with Vista. I generally replace my laptops every three years or so. Thanks for any input.

If you are getting a new laptop, Vista should fine. SP1 is coming out for Vista so it should fix some issues that it faces right now. And most of Vista problems are related to gaming or some media-editting program. If you are only using your laptop for word processing and internet browsing, you should be fine. Make sure that you have at least 2GB of RAM in your new laptop so that Vista runs smoothly.

*EDIT*
I just re-read your post, I am not sure whether Vista is going to have a problem with your Palm TX. Try to search around in Google and see whether others have any problem with synchronizing the Palm TX.

I think that SP1 is supposed to fix the issues regarding the Palm TX. Anyone know when SP1 will be out.

Get Vista Ultimate. You will not be sorry. Bear in mind XP is now a 6 year ols OS and support for it will die very soon. If you are going to buy a new PC (Notebook) then equip it with the latest OS available and cross whatever bridges you have to in the future. The post above stated 2 g of Ram. That is mandatory on all Vista systems. Most come standard with 1G but get the upgrade. Latest data on Vista SP1 is that it will come out in the first quarter 2008 but time will tell on that. Any new system will give you some hiccups at first but perserverence will prevail and you will be able to overcome any problems.

Good luck.

Yeah, because Microsoft just recently dropped support for windows 98....

By your logic we should just keep using broken items because eventually it will fix itself? Every wonder why vista requires so much memory?

Windows XP will be supported for years to come. Enterprises drive business more than consumer products do. Enterprise networks buy 1,000s of desktops, and buy site licenses for Microsoft software. No one is upgrading to vista except the consumer. No business wants to touch it, nor do I blame them with all the issues it brings. Vista has also proven so crappy for the first time ever companies are offering a previous version of windows with your system, and even a Linux OS on consumer level computers. HP and Dell are both doing it, as well as Lenovo now. Their is reason for it.

I recommend you just use XP and wait for Vienna to come out, since MS slated it to come out sometime in 2009. It will probably be what vista was suppose to be, and Vista could end up being the next WindowsME, who knows?

Heh. :)

Stick with XP. It's tried and tested. Vista still has a long way to go. There's a reason major companies are staying away from it and Dell insists to continue offering XP as an OS choice. Spec for spec, your hardware will go much further with XP. Aero is eye candy, nothing more. Stable performance is what matters, and as far as Windows goes, XP is much more stable than Vista.

In your situation, XP is fine. Have you tried Vista? If you have, and you like it, get Vista. I use Vista for all the purposes you described (with exception to the Palm TX - that might be significant), and it works fine. First, you should confirm that Vista works well with your Palm. If it does work, then it's just a matter of personal preference.
