hello

I am looking to upgrade my HP M8000N

I want to boost the ram to 4gb currently only 2gb

I believe the ram that is in my system is pc2 4200. I think it will support 6400 (pleas confirm) would i notice the boost if i have 2 slots with 4200 and two slots with 6400 would i be better off replacing the 4200 and having every thing 6400. or cost wise would i just be better off buying 2gb of 4200 and calling it good.

newegg has 8 pc2-4200 2x1gb kits listed $59-75 the top 4 listed are corsair, Kingston, g skills and crucial. i am leaning to the g skill just because it has a heat spreader. is this a wise move is the heat spreader worth having? is g skill a good product?

Are there any specific types or specs fo the ram i am looking for

thanks

First of all, what OS do you have installed in your computer? Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit?

Looking that your computer is from HP, I am going to make a guess that your OS is 32-bit. I need to let you know that 32-bit OS can only recognize up to 3.12GB of RAM so getting 4GB of RAM is a waste of money if you cannot use all of them.

O

I thought that vista 32 (my os) would support 4gb and then 64 upped it to 8

thanks for the in site It looks like it will be cheaper for me now being i only need to buy 1 stick of 1gb

or you could get 1GB in dual channel (2x512MB) which I believe should perform better than a stick of 1GB, theoretically speaking. I might be wrong

NO, a 32 bit OS will only recognize just a little over 3 gbs of ram. Only a 64 bit OS will recongnize anything over that amount. And if you tell us what you will be using your computer for we can tell whether you are wasting your money even going to 3gbs. If you don't do anything memory intensive(high end gaming, video editing, cad) then 1-2gbs is plenty.

Yeah, you could get two sticks of 1GB and remove the old ones. That way you'll have Dual Channel 2GB which performs better than normal 2GB RAM.

if your computer currently has 2x1GB (2GB) 4200, i would just buy 2x512mb (1GB) which will be 3GB total. its by far the cheapest way....only 35 bucks.

but if you plan on buying a 64 bit OS in the future, just buy 2x2GB (4GB). that would cost about 175 bucks plus youll have to buy a new OS.

so
35 bucks gets u 3 GBs of ram
or about 300 bucks will get u 64 bit OS and 4GBs of ram (upgradeable to even more in the future tho).

3.25GB, 32Bit...

128GB, 64bit...

2GB is enought for most applications already. 4GB is overkill, especially for an prebuilt. With 4Gb and an crappy GFx...

Didn't you mean to quote the original poster and not me? :)

according to CPU-Z i have dual channelpc 4300

I think i will get just 1gb

looks like the concisest is that 2x512 is faster then 1x1

I am upgrading to a video card which means i have to upgrade the power supply to handle the card so i figured being how i was in there i would just upgrade the ram also

thanks guys

Dual channel 2GB-2GB is the best option for you friend go for that i really helps you and provide facilities to all means..g skill is also ok but dual channel 2GB-2GB is the tested ram which is very much reliable and having a good scope and size which make your processing very fast.
