Building my FIRST computer, need assistance :)

Ok here it goes. I've spent HOURS figuring out what parts I want for under $1600. I have a full tower case and a dvd burner drive already, so have those bases covered. I'm going for a system that will be able to run games no sweat, so something with power :). Here is what I compiled and think will work for parts:

Motherboard: ASUS 775 G33 uATX board $120
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 $280
Memory: Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066 (4x1GB) $362
Graphics: MSI nvidia 8800 Ultra 768MB $595
Hard Drive: Seagate 400GB 7200RPM $100
Power Supply: mushkin 650 watt $130

So the total would be approximately $1587 with newegg.com. Does this system seem to go together well? Or are there areas I might want to change up the hardware?

I wouldn't bother buying that ram, is expensive as crap, and isn't much better than the pc2 800 for 100$ 2x1gb, then the power supply, you'd be better with a corsair 620w for that price
 
In addition to waht chup said, I disagree with that processor choice...you should go with either the Q6600 (try to get a G0...I used clubit.com) or if you can afford it, one of the Core 2 Extreme's. You should step back the graphics card from the 8800 ultra to the 8800GTX, as the performace gain for the money is minimal.
 
Don't get the MB with G33 chipset! get one with P35 chipset!
e.g. MSI P35 Platinum or GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4
 
Yeah, the G33 is not better than the P35's or the 680i's... Take an look at them...
I'd recommend an 620HX...

You can get DDR2 800 XMS2 2GB Dual Channel Kit for like $52 after rebate, get 2 kits, 4GB.
 
Awesome! Thanks for all the advice, I think I'll go ahead and go with the cheaper RAM. That XMS2 does have a $40 rebate, so it'd be only 120 for 4 gigs, can't go wrong. Also, I looked into the corsair power supply, and that seems like a better deal.

As for the motherboard, I'll be going with the MSI 650i board. It seems like it has everything I'd need, including maybe upgrading to SLI. What about Operating Systems? Should I go with the Vista 64-bit just for the heck of it? It's either that or XP professional, but I'd like to get something that I won't have to upgrade 4 years or so down the road. Thanks!

DUH of course it would be a little more expensive, but how expensive? 20 bucks at best? if he can't cut on anything and get the 20$ off then that's another thing but since you want to go cheap on his build go ahead, if he later complains it'll your problem not mine

I just agreed with your and told him to go with your advice, while you still push the blame on me... The "little more expensive part", might have been an misunderstanding to you. I meant around the words of "It's an bit more money, but well worth it as you can upgrade it with 45nm processor in the future without dishing out extra cash for an newer motherboard in the future"...

Did I explain it well enough or do I have to go again?

4 years from now, Quads and Octos will probably be as disgraced as the P4's and AMD's are right now. Aren't the new processors coming out with an different socket anyways?

No 45mm processors will be socket 775 or at least the ones that are coming this November/December ( dunno if they are going to throw a new socket next year ) and even if he weren't going to upgrade in 4 years, by the 4 years current processors will be out of the market even ebay will have very few, while 45mm might have a bigger amount.

Now for the other thing, start spell checking and re-phrasing words before making some comment that might sound like another thing

If i were you id get a Quad Core but you dont have to if dont want to.

What does my spelling have to do with this!? And where did I even spell something wrong?? Maybe it's just that you take things too seriously, or I express my "thought" too much. Have you thought of that?

I would go with vista 64 bit because 32 bit operating systems can only support up to 3 gigs of ram
