suggestions for new gaming rig

Hi all,

I've decided to build a new gaming rig. I'm going to keep my old system to use for internet, word processing ect... so my new system will be purely for games.
I'm more knowledgeable than your average user and have built systems in the past but I have been out of the game for some time and I am not intimately familiar with the hardware that is available. I've got around 4k to work with but I'd rather not spend that much. I know that the cutting edge technology is not only a poor choice from a cost benefit point of view but that much of that tech will not be fully utilized by current software so I don't want the cutting edge. I'd like to dial the edge back to the point where the cost performance ratio is a little more balanced. I would like to be able to play the most demanding games at their fullest and continue to do so for some time to come but not at the cost of getting overpriced hardware. I have little experience with over clocking but I am not too afraid to give it a try.

What would you guys suggest?
 
wait for the nvidia 9800s to come out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the best CPU is the intel quad core 6850
 
Yeah, 6 months later there is something better and a year later completely out of date. 32 nm cpus in 2009.
 
you have to go top notch cutting edge to max out games now AND in the future fyi

and if you have 4k, 2k will get you a bad ass gaming rig so there you go, and thats using mostly top notch stuff without going overkill
 
I will suggest wait until Q1/08, the 45nm intel is coming out, (Jan 08?? not sure the exact date.) and at that time, new nvidia 9 series is out as well

32 nm cpus in 2009.

Unless you need it right now, prices are going to be dropping this winter. 4k will getcha an good QX6850 or better, an 680i, and lots more.

Where do you live?
 
I live in West Virginia, but I get most of my parts online. I built my current rig about three years ago and all I've upgraded since is my vid and sound cards and it has only recently begun to come up short and it wasn't cutting edge when I built it.

Good. When do you need the computer? What do you use it for?
 
This will be a pure gaming rig.:cool:

My current system works just fine so there is no real NEED for a new system in a hurry the old girl just can't keep up with current game tech.:P
 
I would get the best stuff now. Why? Because by the time the new tech comes out if you got back on this website and said "Should I wait or Buy" everyone would say wait, because there would be newer tech on the way. Buy the best now, upgrade it later...it's the only way you will ever keep up unless you buy a new computer every 2 months.
 
I am in no great hurry to build this system so if waiting will do some good I'd be willing to. But like theresthatguy and compfused said, whats available now will always be cheaper later and there is always some new tech on the horizon.

If prices as a whole are going to drop during the winter as Oscaryu1 suggests or if there is going to be a fundamental shift in tech in the near future such as moving from PCIe to some newer interface, not just the continual incremental improvement in tech, then I can see waiting, otherwise it would be a never ending cycle.
 
id say wait til mid november then start piecing your rig together... You could even buy some Core 2 Duo rig now for prolly 800-900 bucks, so thats a route to go as well... You dont HAVE to have a new Quad CPU to game at high settings
 
In other words, you could start piecing together now a rig that has gone down in price from lets say 4-6 months ago
 
Like I said in the first post of my other thread, I just can't wait.:rolleyes: Besides it seems the more questions I answer, the more I have.:o The way things are going, it WILL be November before I start putting this thing together!:D LOL
