Future of the AGP bus

Future of AGP

Well, I love gaming, but unfortunately I'm not able for the foreseeable future to lay down for a new system with pci express. I'm figuring it will probably be around 1000 $ for a good rig.

So with my 7800gs and 3.4 ghz p4 I'm braving the winds and waves of bioshock, cod4, ut3...etc. Any idea guys if there is perhaps a new lineup soon for better agp cards coming out? Like agp versions of the ati 2900 (2600 it's out but not too good) or 8800, 8600 nvidia for poor folk like myself?

I was actually thinking of selling my evga 7800gs and "upgrading" (lmao) to a gecube x1950xt...but thought this is probably a waste of time, since the two cards are very similar.

I know this thread will see a lot of "AGP is dead" or "agp sucks", "just upgrade it's easier" etc. etc.. Of all of you I know this the best lol. Just hope people might shine some light on agp's future, new cards (possible ports from pci express cards :D ), stuff like that. I'd like to keep an eye on this thread, maybe novelties will arise. Thanks.

I'm afraid to say it but I think it is dead. The main reason for moving on was for a higher bandwith and for this the architecture was changed. There is no BUS but serial links so at hardware level it has changed.

Just want put it beyond any thread of doubt. I can't see why people still like AGP? AGP cards are more expensive and yet people still buy it, you are better off upgrading to PCI-E than to shell out for a high performing AGP card.

ati and nvidia both said they were not looking at the agp bus (not really a bus as it only controls 1 device) directly. Any new card with be through the agp/pci-e bridge chips. there was a rumour not long ago about a nvidea dx10 card, and nvidia have reinvested in the agp/pci bridge so there is the possibility of a seeing something in the 8xxx series.

i run 2 rigs on agp, its easy to say just upgrade, but there are additional costs to bear, mobo, prob cpu, gpu, maybe some extras.

good points guys. And the pci-express 2.0...omg lol. With my luck man, the minute I upgrade to pci express 1.0, the industry is gonna be making all the cards for 2.0 LMAO. Then I'll put up a new post "The future of Pci-express 1.0" LMAO  :D

but anyway here is a little more on my opinion on this:

PCI cards were outdone by agp cards. Just as agp was outdone by the faster pci express...so pci should have...died

Yet PCI has in the past 2 years or so released some pretty intense ;) cards.

X1550 ati
X1300 ati
9250 ati
6200 nvidia
BFG PhysX

I remember thinking a while back that pci was gonna end with 5200 nvidia and 9200 ati. And bam the cards just kept coming out!

I also realize that pci is more popular then agp was...so maybe it's that. With pci it's obvious that those guys had to upgrade because their processors couldn't hack the new games. But agp users that have high end processors can still hold out lol
You would be astounded how quickly the x1950xt from gecube (agp version) sells out at any online computer store. At Newegg it takes only hours and they're gone. The demand is still huge man and they can't deny a huge group of people still using agp. So I think that at least a few more generations of cards will show up. Although they will keep extending the time between generations.

Now I'm not against progress and movement in the industry. Hell when you are a publicly traded company, if ur not churning out stuff for people to buy and giving them a reason to toss away good hardware then your investors will frown and everyone down the chain will take a dump. But not everyone is an enthusiast. I mean I ran the new ut3 demo the other day at 1440 resolution with most stuff on medium.

just my .02

in response to your direct x10 quote apj101...bwahahaha agp....the ex gf/bf that stalks you in your sleep...

I agree with you man...and reinstalling my os or even "moving" it...all my settings LOL god I have better things to do LOL

Might as well just throw down the 200$ and go vista...

it's all a plot by microsoft and intel!!:D

The PCI was not just made for graphics, that why it hasn't died. Alot of other peripherals run off the PCI bus. AGP and PCI-E are JUST slots for graphics cards, there is a difference.

so anyway...now that we've established that agp...sucks...uhh anybody know what possible new cards might be coming out in '08 (for agp)?

I am still using AGP and I upgraded to a 2600 pro, Yeah I know it's not the fastest AGP card, but I just could not see parting with some cash for a dx9 card.

I will not be able to upgrade for at least a year due to money problems, and the fact that I have to go into surgery this Thursday, so I just went cheap and upgraded my GPU.

But, that 2600 pro runs UT3 demo on max settings at 1680x1050 with no problems, so I am happy.

I replaced a ATI 9700 pro as it just would not play bioshock or UT3 at all.

are you serious? UT3 at max settings? what kind of fps are you getting? and your setup?? becuase I ran ut3 demo with my 7800gs and p4 3.4 ghz and couldn't by far max the settings out, I had it mostly at med. with 1440 res. And even then I would get a lot of stuttering and weird game pausing during intense fights.
I'd like to see a comparison of the new 2600 and the old 7 series cards or 1950 cards agp...anybody have a link?
