Newbie question - HELP!!

Hi everybody, this is my first post on this site.
While surfing a porn site - cuz I get bored sometimes - I was given some free anti-virus/anti-spyware software that I don't want. How do I get this crap off my computer? I have gone into Add/Remove programs and they're not there. I have done a search for them, but nadda. I have actually downloaded the free trial of one of them, then uninstalled it, but now it's back.
These programs have installed themselves on my task bar and they keep popping up their alerts. This crap is driving me up the freakin wall.:mad:
Any help is truly appreciated.
 
try running a virus scan
And like Ghost said what was it called?
And check add or remove programs for one called system alert pop up.

Reformat time. The sites sometimes have fake pop ups claiming that you have an trojan, or spyware, and make you fall into trying it out. After that they give you fake warnings and try to make you buy the software.

Personally, I would say reformat, but otherwise, Add/Remove Programs, Registry Mechanic, and CCleaner will do well.

anywho, CCleaner, AVG or Avast virus snan, and theres Ad-Aware... if you can find it to uninstall and these don't work... you may need to perform a system restore
 
Okay, the program is called AntiVirGear. I've tried Ad-Aware, Spyware Terminator, Registry Mechanic, and nadda. Also checked for system alert pop up and also nadda.
Anyway, I'm gonna try a couple more anti-spyware proggies, and if I can't get it, then system recovery time I guess. In any event, thank alot for all of your suggestions. If I find a cure before having to do recovery, I'll post my results.
 
Once you have removed it from Add and remove. Use registery edit pro to remove the record from the registery.
 
A reinstall is not necessary, AntiVirGear is relatively simple to remove. Here's how:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot to Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts to load and select Safe Mode from the list).

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.

You will be prompted :

Registry cleaning - "Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer Yes by typing Y and press Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer Yes by typing Y and press Enter.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

So that we can be sure your system is clean, please download the HijackThis installer from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe.

Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

When the Notepad window opens choose Edit -> Select All to select the entire log, and copy and paste the log into a reply post.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Please post:
  • Your Smitfraudfix log at c:\rapport.txt
  • A HijackThis log as described above
