i have two WRT54G's and i want to set up the second one to be a wireless access point. i've had the first one up and goin like normal for a while now. ive just set up the second one to be a "router" (not a gateway) and i can get the wired connection to work just fine. but when i unplug the wire goin from the second router to the first i cannot get the wireless to work.

can someone please help me?

P.S. in the end i want to be able to have my wifes macbook pro wirelessly connect to it, and my xbox 360 wired to it.

thanks

This is easy, done it before

basically you need to set up one main router as your DHCP server, and have it connect to your ISP. You will want to set it up like this, and I am assuming you will be running a cable from router to router. If you want to bridge them via wireless and have one repeat you will need to set up WDS.

Primary router:
IP - 192.168.1.1
DHCP - enabled
DNS - DHCP
Gateway - DHCP
mode - OSPF
firewall - enabled
NAT - Enabled
SSID - your network
WiFI encryption - WPA

Secondary Router:
IP - 192.168.1.2
DHCP - disabled
WAN - disabled
Gateway - 192.168.1.1
DNS - 192.168.1.1
mode - OSPF
firewall - disabled
NAT -disabled
SSID - mimic settings
WiFi encryption - WPA
bump the AP up or down two channels, so it broadcasts on a separate channel to reduce interference with the primary WiFi

This configuration assumes you will be connecting both routers with a cat5 cable. All ports are auto sensing on Linksys routers so there is no need for a cross over cable. Also, if you disable the WAN port, you can use it as a regular port on the switch.

thanks

you have to have the wire going from the 1st router to the 2nd router plugged in cuz thats how the second router is getting internet

err, ya im wanting to connect my xbox to the second router with a wire. but i want the two routers to be connected via airwaves :D.

So basically you want to use the second router to recieve a wireless signal and plug in an ethernet cable to your xbox?

ya thats what im lookin for.

this is possible if you bridge the connections together with WDS, and it will repeat the wireless signal. Unless you are just wanting to use the Ethernet on the other router, then you just need to bridge the connections.

this is what im wanting to do. figured it would be easier if i just drew a pic. sry for not croping, there is not software to do that with the computer im on at work :(
also... im wanting to do it this way because i already have that second router, i dont have the money to buy the wireless adapter.

thanks guys

In the CP for your secondary router, you need to turn off DCHP server, and set it to bridge mode. Then go and set up the proper wireless network to bridge, which you should have set up on your primary router. That way you can connect both routers with out a cable. Do note that if you put it in bridge mode you will not redistribute the wireless from the secondary router. You can only use the wired ports. If you want it to repeat the WiFi, then you need to run a wireless bridge with WDS. Not all routers support this, and you may need to look into third party firmware.

thanks for the help tlarkin, MUCH APPRECIATED!!

and just a FYI jbrown, the xbox and second router will have no computer connected to them after setup. they are in two dif rooms.
