Ubuntu 7.04 Driver Problem

I ordered an 8600GTS and just installed Ubuntu 7.04 (Dual Booting with Vista) and I want to use the drivers Nvidia offers (found here).

I thought this would be a simple enough task, but I forgot that in Linux (or at least ubuntu) NOTHING is simple, and everything is overly complicated. So I try to take the dumbass [linux] way of doing things. I downloaded the file to my desktop, its a .run file. I got it to successfully run in the terminal, since its text based, but then I get this
ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com

So basically...I guess I need to close X Server? How do I do this? It says to download some thing from them that edits the Config file for you, but I can't get it to work either.

Can ANYONE just please help me to install these drivers? I never dreamed it would be this difficult..(but I'm used to Windows OS......you know...the OS that actually works and gets things accomplished without a P.H.D. in computer technology?

so like
Code:
su innit
?

lol or do you mean type su in front of the code that nvidia has me enter (because i've already tried that)

Yeah you shouldnt have to do it that way. Ubuntu has a built in device that installs proprietary drivers via a gui interface.

Well I tried to get Beryl to work and...BOOM goes the OS...

I guess I get to reinstall it yet again (Why must this OS be so shitty?)

Well, i dont want to go into it, but it's not the OS that is shitty. No offence but it works great.
Yeah, installing beryl would be a very important matter in why you have no video. So before you reformat, tell me exactly what you did to install beryl. What howto did you follow? Did you create an xgl session? What video card do you have? What drivers are you using (fglrx, ati, etc.). Did video work before you messed with beryl?
Sorry but when people say that something is not working and have us guys spend time on trying to fix it and you totally neglect to tell us why it went down it pisses me off.

I know its not shitty...its more of a "i dont know what i'm doing" thing.....but it really helps "vent" lol....I also can understand why you get pissed off, so i'll my best to explain.

What howto did you follow?
to install beryl, I followedthis page's instructions which was dumb...because I'm pretty sure you can install beryl from the add/remove programs list.

Did you create an xgl session?
i'm not sure...I just did what the page told me to

What video card do you have?
Nvidia 8600GTS

What drivers are you using (fglrx, ati, etc.).
Well I used Envy
but if I read the instructions correctly, it said that it gets its drivers from Nvidia's website.

Did video work before you messed with beryl?
It sure did. It only messed up when I got the point where the howto said "Now you need to restart your X by logging out and in or by pressing ctrl+alt+backspace." When I hit ctrl+alt_backspace, it said that my x file (x server file?) was messed up (something to that effect).

Ok, it is a problem with your driver. Do
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
But this time select the "nv" drivers and then when its done type
Code:
start
and see if it works.

Well I already got it to work before I read your post (using the add/remove programs thing)

Thanks for your help though, and I have one more question. If I can, how can I make a backup of the "system files" so if anything ever happens again, I don't have to download all of the updates/beryl/other crap.

Also, beryl is pretty sweet!

Beryl was discontinued months ago, so don't expect any updates or new features.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon is officially released tomorrow and has Compiz-Fusion by default.

Yes Ubuntu is very shitty and racist XD... Have you seen the Colors ?? Brown... not white BROWN Wallpaper, Icons, Login them, ..... Thats too much .. Oh and You cant customize Ubuntu very well I tried changing the Login theme and it lagged when i tried to log in...
I reported the bug to Ubuntu .. About 8 time never responded... Then I tried a Red Hat Linux Based Operating System with GNOME manual installed ... WORKED GREAT!!

Oh and by the way UBUNTU was my First LINUX that i ever used.. And i thought it was SHIT

Sorry for my bad language its just i'm expressing my Hate for Ubuntu.. XD
For all you people who have Ubuntu ... SORRY...

Well, Ubuntu is Debian's bastard child, and even though some things don't work the same way in other Distros, Debian based distros do have a more strict policy on what packages they can and can't use. Which makes everything that was written for debian based distros work flawlessly, but if you want to run a redhat based packaged (rpm) you have to jump through hoops and hope it works.

Then again, do you really need like 5 package managers? I like Debian's approach, and ubuntu is the more user friendly version.

It is like I tell everyone. Linux is something that you must learn, just like any other OS. Using it is not really that hard, and installing applications really is not that hard either. The problem is the command line, people are scared of change and don't want to learn BASH. I don't blame them either, there is no reason for them to learn BASH.

However, once you learn it, and start scripting easy tasks to automate them. You see truly how powerful it really is.

I just got finished downloading Ubuntu 7.10 No more Crappy Ubuntu ..Sorry for my Latest Post.. 7.04 wasnt the one that was good for me. On the other hand Ubuntu 7.10 is great i finally got my Ipod Nano to work on it ...YESS!! Oh Ubuntu now has good support for my new hardware, My opinion : Alot better than 7.04 ALOT thats only because of the Drivers Support. I'm gonna get Kubuntu 7.10 Since i like KDE desktops. Oh and Ubuntu is a Good Linux to start with only it wasnt built for the applications that i needed.. I guess they fixed that. I'm still not gonna change from PCLOS.

You can install kubuntu via entering the command
Code:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
and then select kde as the session type at the login window.
I agree, gutsy is awesome!
