Mouse Problem

I have a computer thats been running for atleast 8 months now, without a problem. I just transported it to another house, and now the mouse no longer works. I've never installed a driver for it, either its plug and play or vista did it for me. When i boot up, the mouse icon is there, but i cannot control it. Windows did not tell me my mouse is not working. I've tried two other mice, but neither work. What might be my problem? I think there might be a windows driver or registry fiel damaged, but i dont know how that could have happened.
 
If you didn't see any damage to the plugin socket on the board when moving the system. What make and model mouse? A desktop icon points at a programmable model like the MS Optical line. The desktop cursor not moving on it's own can be from one of two things. The ps/2 socket if not using a usb port was damaged somehow or Windows is seeing a glitch with the default mouse driver.

If you left the mouse plugged while moving one bump could easily have seen the ps/2 scoket damaged in some way. But the first you may want to try is a system restore point or use the automatic repair tools now seen on the Vista installation disk. Instead of choosing the install now option look down for the repair tools button. Once in the next screen go for the fix startup problems option found there.
 
I'm using a logitech mx500 optical mouse. The light comes on when i plug it in. It connects via USB. Logitech says the mouse uses the Vista native mouse drivers.

I have an old ps/2 ball mouse running right now, but I'd still lieke to get the mx500 running.

I'm on vista ultimate 64-bit, btw.

Try it on another computer. If it doesn't work either, you probably damaged it in transit.
 
i just tested it on another computer, and it worked fine. then, i brought it back to mine, plugged it in, and it worked again there too. i have no idea what the problem was, but its now resolved.
 
Maybe all Windows needed was a redetection of the mouse as a new input device. That's more commonly seen with usb type devices over a ps/2 or other like serial or parallel. If you see problems again try the add hardware wizard to select input device from the list and let Windows auto search for the drivers.
