Building a new comp and it's been a while

Hiya,

So I'm looking to build myself a new PC. Mostly cause mine at home decided to fall apart. I'm guessing it's the mobo, but it got a total overhaul about 4 years back and the time has come just to start fresh (mostly fresh). I used to be tech savy but in the past few years I've payed less and less attention to hardware and more to my animation and artwork. So I've complied what I'm guessing is a decent PC and just looking for final thoughts.

Money - This isn't a real big factor, I don't wanna go TOO expensive and I'm gonna save a few things from my old pc that are salvageable.

Uses - Some gaming right now I'm into all things Orange box. Mostly it's going to be used for 3D Animation work. Not a lot of poly's on screen, I'm an animator so low poly models. Very few if any intense graphics and processor intensive effects as well. Studio Max, After Effects mostly

Why.. built on vid card so I can wait to buy the video card, PCI-e for later, 4 DDR slots 8gig max, PCI for wireless card, fits in to the case. It's got a sound card that does stereo which is plenty for my computer work.

Why.. I have ram, dunno if it's the right ram right now so I have to check, but this stuff is cheap and it fits.

I have HD's
I have a wireless PCI card
I have a CD/DVD burner

I have no real preference between AMD and Intel, so if theres a better deal on a mobo/cpu of another brand feel free to suggest. To me it's a computer, and although the box is a bit flashy I'm not a tech buff and don't care to have top of the line products, just something that works for me.

Why do you want to build your self such an Old tech system?

Everything you have listed is "ancient" by todays standards. If you are on a very tight budget, then maybe I can understand your choices.

Please list a budget so we can help you. And what operating system do you prefer?

I'm really looking to go $400 max for the case, mobo, ram, cpu. My comp right now is running 2k and that works for me. I might wanna up it xp, but it's not a requirement, if I did it would be just for the heck of it.

:( went over an bit. You could try an 7600GS... or an 7300... Just remember that if you took shipping out...

EDIT - Paratwa rewinded me. You can use your orig optical, case,ect and other stuff and save tons. The 7900GS would help ALOT in gaming. Especially later DX9 games.

With this system you can still use your old HDD and DVD/CD player, but if you want to add anything else you will have to buy a sata drive. Since this motherboard only supports 2 devices of the type you currently have.

The onboard video will not play todays newest games, but it will be ok for what you want it for.
 
I wouldn't go for that tiny case, Get a midsize atx, those micro cases tend to raise temperatures up due to insufficient airflow.
doesn't look like you'll be needing too power so i'd spring for one of those cases that come with a power supply and save some cash there. I wouldn't go with onboard video - usually sucks pretty bad. get a mobo with pci-e x16 and buy a nice cheap 7300gt or x1550 and use that for now, theyll run most games pretty well unless you are a perfectionist who wants real detail out of everything.

e6550 is $175 4mb level 2 cache, a really fast modern chip - $175 a decent motherboard will run around 80-100, and a $50 graphics card and you're rolling. Ram can be had pretty cheap nowadays I just bought 2 gigs of pc-6400 ddr2 (800 mhz) ram for $60 from new egg.

so all that should run around $400.

Although, If I can make a recommendation, If you are using older IDE hard drives, upgrade to a SATA drive, the difference is very very noticable.

You DO know that most case PSU's won't power an P3 right right?

And 2GB DDR2 800 - Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 is $49.

$50 will probably get you only an 7300 or so.

I don't think onboard graphic can handle 3d animation work....
 
Hey thanks guys.... and about the onboard graphics, if I can't get my 3D stuff working at home I can always just do personal stuff at the office. Then in the future get a better graphics card. I'm intending on doing that anyhow.
 
Danka, I haven't bought a pre-done computer since like 94ish time frame. I made quite a few between 98 and like '03 (my current broken PC) but haven't touched ANY hardware since then... I feel so out of touch... :(
