Auto restarting while surfing / gaming

What causes such abrupt auto restarts ? Even when I leave the com on with a game open ... unexpectedly I would find my monitor black and alt+tab don't work but when I press sleep button it auto restarts for me ...

is it because the installed graphic driver is faulty ? or maybe too much ram makes my graphic card work more or motherboard work more ...or some other problems..

novice here :(

Graphic card : Nvidia Geforce MX 4000

the computer restarts, or just crashes to the desktop?

Try new drivers , but sounds like overheating

search google for PC Wizard and check your components temperatures and get back to me with the readings on PM :D

The Core and memory clock on the 8500gt and 8600GT are not all that different, but the 8500 only has 16 Stream Processors where the 8600 has 32

Memory leak due to poorly coded drivers, overheating on the CPU, power supply losing efficiency and causing shutdowns, or the 12V is getting too low...

so the first thing I should do is try updating my graphic drivers to the latest?

it usually happens when I've used the com for like 6hrs or more ...think it's overheating ? my graphic card gets heated up easily even after 2hrs of operation. After a whole day like 6-10hrs + it becomes ultra super duper hot ... probably my fans aren't working that well to keep it cool?

If it's PSU problem it will happen anytime right?

I would try a new set of drivers first to see how things go. When any new line of cards comes out whether ATI or NVidia the driver sets often see some initial bugs. On the new build here lately with an ATI driven card the ati2dvag.dll driver error was too often seen in the BSODs that came up even some sudden restarts of the system.

At first the temps or a fault with the replacement board came to mind only to find those well in their normal idle. No faults with memory or bios settings. That wsa after the system had been on for several hours as well. This was seen during and after sound drivers were the first things needed to be corrected. Then ATI released the new 7.10 version of their catalyst and all is well.

omg I just touched the graphic card again and it's freaking hot few seconds with your finger on it could get it burnt ... it's like when you touch a kettle of boiling water on the surface ... why is it so freaking hot??!

edit : realized I've put 1 of my fans the wrong way ... instead of blowing into the cpu it's blowing out ...don't know if this would have cause the major overheating of my graphic card ...just switched it.still hot though ...or does this graphic card(nvidia geforce4 mx 4000) generate a lot of heat in nature? what can I do about the heat generated

What are some of the system specifications there? It sounds like you have a few things to worry about. Heat from the card itself won't be enough to see hard drives get hot. A confined case with limited air flow however will see all temps climb somewhat. Have you used anything to monitor temps with like PC Wizard as suggested earlier, SpeedFan, and one I could point you at called System Info for Windows(SIW) found at http://www.gtopala.com/

system specs?

Amd sempron processor
2800+
1.6GHz , 1.5GB ram
nvidia geforce4 mx 4000

system temp 38-41
cpu temp 37-38

you mean this?

i switched the direction of some of my fans , now it isn't that heated up..

The temps look well within their normal range there for a Socket A or 754 model. But those are not for the video card seen there. That could be the primary concern if that still is found hot to touch. Have you been turning anything up like ocing the card at all?

I don't know how to oc so I don't think ocing is present.
Well I switch the direction of fans around , now the card isn't that hot anymore

For these few days there wasn't any problems yet

Sounds like you need a good 3rd party vpu cooler there to keep the card from overheating itself. The reference to ocing the card was since the temps for video cards won't be seen in any monitoring program or the bios hardware monitor.

Once you swung the fans around you are now seeing the card run cooler due to the increase in air flow towards it. Having a good vpu cooler installed will be a plus if the card isn't already heading for a failure. But you know where the problem is anyways.

I had this problem before. The RAM was faulty, but it could be other things, just make sure you check the RAM for any possible problems.

You could try reformatting, but don't do that unless you can't isolate the problem.

The problem has been isolated with high temps and a need for better cooling being the actual source of the problem. This isn't a memory problem since things have shown improvement by simply facing the fans in the opposite direction as Waff pointed out. Bad ram often sees problems before you even reach the desktop.

didn't got any problems after switching the fans ... now I got problem with automatic alt-tab while I'm gaming or afk in-game ..happens occasionally

I had a problem with my computer that it was shutting down and after I switched over to vista x64 from xp x86 the problems went away I think it was cuz all my parts were 64 bit so it was having a problem with the os
