Which is better for the computer?
A. Leave it on all night
B. Shut it down then turn it on when you need to use it
C. Sleep mode
D. Hibernate mode

What is best for the computer? Which do you do?

It really depends on the circumstances. I believe it's best to shut it down at night and then turn it back on in the morning, however it's easier and maybe more efficient to put it in sleep mode if you are only going to be away from it for a few hours max.

What ever floats ya boat i say... i leave it on all day and turn it off at night. Obviously don't turn it on/off every time you leave the room... :P

I,ve left some on mostly 24/7 and shut some down when not in use and have never really been able to tell a difference in hardware failure. If you leave them on 24/7 is good to restart sometimes because Windows will get buggie after a long time being booted.

i heard thermal wear if you shut it on and off but i heard if you leave it on the hardware in the computer will wear out quicker

nah, your fine however you want to do it. I have never seen a computer "wear" out... only if it had faulty hardware

i just shut it down at night
if i have school from 7-3 would it be better to turn it on before school even if im not going to use it or turn it on when i get home from school?

I would think that the advantage of hibernate/sleep is simply the quick startup however the bad side involves the cluttering/fragmentation of your HDD when the RAM data is written to the HDD. I suppose this would be a probelm for those who do this frequently only. I cant completely remember the difference between sleep and hibernate or if there is any at all.

leaving your computer on all the time would not be such a good thing either simply because of heat, electrical and mechanical stress over time (nothing's perfectly designed, nor do they all run perfectly).

I dont see the need to leave your computer on if it's going to do nothing of use for (at least) 2-3hrs. People are always talking aobut heat management. why? because they dont want stuff to break, and they want it to last longer!!! (especially when overclocking).
Finally, I will finish by talking about the saving in greenhouse gasses wone can make by switching their computer off for an hour. l

Lets say you have a PC that uses 300watts on average, compare this to the average incandescant light bulb - 60-100W. your computer will use enough energy to power 3-4 rooms. whats the point of all these ads on TV etc trying to get you to turn off a couple of lights when the ununsed computer being turned off will do that for probably every bedroom in your house.

If you see my rig in the signature below, I have that, and another pc on 450wh and neither one is ever turned off. I also have 2 laptops, one is an Asus V1JPAK028E, 2.0 GHz, 2Gb RAM, 160Gb HDD, and another laptop which is a Dell Inpsiron 5100, and an Acer TravelMate 2492wlmi. The desktop in my sig below is web server so is running 24/7, other desktop just shut down for holidays, Asus laptop mostly on, Dell on constantly, Acer is bout 12/7. Dell is my portable for school, so it is in very frequent use.

People worry too much about the hype that turning your computer off and on will wear it out faster. Even if this is true, the odds are something else will happen to your computer before the parts actually wear out, except for the possibility of the hard drive.

As for me now, I turn my computer off when I go to school and when I go to bed, unless I am downloading a large file or I want my computer on for remote access from school.

mine stays on all day at home 27/7. never switch it off, except sometimes when i do general cleaning in my room
