New Build - Component Selection

Need a bit of help with the selection of a mobo and case. Don't know how to determine whether a mobo will fit in a specified case. Any help greatly appreciated.

Pls, anyone got any solutions or suggestions? It is going to be used as a web server, so preferably inexpensive, lots of hdd space, not running much else except apache, mail server, ftp server, game server, and windows xp. I need to have the parts ordered and built within 9 days. Please help.

To go with that quad core? do you want the option of SLI (dual video cards)? any ATX case will work, its really budget and personal preference

Yeah, I need to build a new web server since my old one took the plunge, my younger brothers drink. All components fried. It will need to run Apache, mail server, ftp server, file sharing server, gaming server and windows xp. I am building it shit because then it doesn't matter if it gets "wet" or gets a virus or whatever. Approx. 300gb space required, with room for upgrades and about 2 additional drives. Require all basic components, like case, psu, motherboard, processor, ram, hdd, video card, gigabit lan, 2 usb 2.0 (preferably 4), sound card etc. 1 DVD-RAM drive. Budget about $500, little more, little less. Preferably less, not much left after processor upgrade on desktop. . . Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

^ Just sounds like you need a normal PC from what I can see.
mail server, file sharing server
How are you planning on backing up the data thats on your server? Might be wise to do a RAID config on your server.

What kind of RAID config do you suggest, and anyway, I can get around HDD backup requirements. Quite a while ago, I purchased an ethernet switch, 8 port, just for NAS (network attached storage) drives. Ethernet switch connected to router, and 3 500gb drives in each of the four NAS drives. Thats 3tb internal on desktop, and 6tb external NAS - all other network PC's are NAS based, so therefore, same Docs and Settings when logging on to any network PC - all on gigabit lan, so preferably have gigabit lan card on the web server. Thanks.

PS - With the NAS, do you still think I will need a RAID config for the server? And if you recommend a normal desktop, I assume about 512mb RAM, 1.8GHz etc, just with HDD upgrade to 320Gb? Comments/assistance appreciated. Do you think it would be easier for me to setup this web server as a network server for my home (all pc's on xp pro sp2 or vista), and use it as a web server at the same time. I don't see why not. Just running a speedtest to a question asked earlier, line speed is 34,731 kb/s down, 3,810 kb/s up. 34.7mb/s down, 3.8mb/s up. That should do for now, but I'm looking at 128mb Broadband on the superband networks coming soon.

Nope. 512 is outta date. Most are 2GB these days, and Core 2 Duos. HDD? SATAII

Ok, assuming selection is 2gb DDR-2 RAM, and 2.0GHz, what components do you recommend? If someone could build us a list or something, from like newegg, ebuyer - whatever - that would be greatly appreciated. I can build PC's, but unless I have the stock there with me, its kinda hard for me to tell which mobo is compatible with which case, because of the port alignment on mobo and case. Thanks.

By the way, I was looking at eBuyer product eBuyer 126116. What do you think of that as a server, but to be honest, I was only looking to spend about 200 quid, or $350 USD on the pc. Would upgrade RAM to 2gb, but what do you think?

$350 in USD is not going to get you much. Maybe an E2140, P31, an cheapo PSU, CD burner, 250GB, and the $15 case... Then the GFX becomes an issue. You might wanna salvage some of the parts from the broken computer.

Yea I use a cnet powerswitch just for the network storage, got an external 500 gb attached to it and it's working out really well for me so far, it is kind of slow over the network but OH WELL/

Yeah, Ok. Thanks for this guys. One last thing, and thats any suggestions on which 300 quid (approx $550) desktop that would be best for me.
