I was trying to re-install windows xp when I got this message

SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest file "D:\1386\asms\1000\MSFT\Windows\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4

Installation failed: D:\1386\asma. Error message: Access is denied



Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?
I am at a complete loss

How are you trying to install it? (CD, network?)
If CD, what version is it? (Retail, OEM, SP2 of either?)

What part does that message appear at?
What else, if anything, is on the HDD you're installing to?
Further, how is the HDD you are installing to partitioned?

I think you have to try again ..it may be some temporary error that may occurs some time and can halt the processing of the operations..so you should try again and again it must work after some time..may be some setting causes this kind of errors.

With all due respect 'friend', The posts you've made on various Threads thus far seem to cause many of us on these Boards, myself included, to question your computer expertise. That being said, some of are are actually trying to assist others by giving genuine answers/advice to genuine problems. If we ask specific questions to specific problems people are having, it's because we most likely have had experience in dealing with those issues in the past and are able to lend a hand to rectify the problem.

The questions I asked the OP were very asked for a very specific reason: to help them install their software so they can be on their way as quickly as possible. "I think you have to try again ..it may be some temporary error that may occurs some time and can halt the processing of the operations..so you should try again and again it must work after some time..may be some setting causes this kind of errors." is not going to do anything for the OP other than cause more frustration with the process than they are already having.

Please step aside and have a seat in the corner while those of us actually trying to help are able to do so without you adding to the confusion.

im not sure
 
Do you know if you made an additional new partition when you began installing? Or did you delete the current one and make a new one? I had a similar problem before I knew how to delete a partition and create a new one to install on.

I'm not sure what I did with the partition. I tried to get to where I could see how it is partitioned, but couldn't find it....

How do you find out how my computer is partitioned?
 
when you startup your pc with the windows disc in and it starts gathering info to install, it should ask you if you want to install on an existing partition, create a new one, or delete one. You may skip over this without realizing. I'll try to do some research its been a while since I did an XP install.

Yes it did show up when i first tried installing xp, but I can't remember what I did with it. I also have no idea how to get back to it. Everytime I re-start my computer it goes right back to the 39 minutes point during installatin and then the error message shows up.

Re: Partitioning...

Start the install process over again, and take it step-by-step. When you get to the part that mentions partitioning, you'll see a list of options. My advice is to delete every partition that show up, no matter how many there are. I forget the exact wording of the instructions, but IIRC, it's 'L' to delete, 'C' to create, and 'Enter' to install XP to the current selected partition. Just hit 'L' for each partition listed and follow the confirmation on the next screen. Do this for each partition. Make sure you take any files you may need off the drive first. By deleting every partition, you'll have one blank, non-formatted disk. I'd recommend making at least 2 partitions after everything has been wiped clean: maybe a 20 GB for Windows and Software, and whatever you have left for your files. That way, even if you have to reinstall XP in the future, you'll still have your personal stuff.

Does the CD have and smudges or scratches on it that could casue it to not read correctly?

39 minutes into the Install? Or 39 minutes remaining in the Install? Better way to ask it (sorry I didn't put it this way at first) is at what part is it freezing? Gathering data, Copying files, installing hardware devices, etc.?
