Okay, here's what happened. I'm going to sound like an idiot, but I have anger issues. I was mad so I hit the laptop to the right of the mouse pad. It made a little weird ringing sound, and got slower. Then it froze after more use. WHEN IT FREEZES THE IMAGE STILL APPEARS. I restarted it and loaded very slow. It still ran and then it froze again. It does this all the time now. There is a clickking sound coming from inside the laptop. My mom thinks it's the harddrive. I would like to know the issue before I buy her a new computer. I am not some asshole who is happy about breaking this. Thanks.

Probably hard drive. Or broken fan, causing the CPU to throttle down, and maybe freeze, due to overheating.

check your temps in the BIOS, if they're ok then try running a bootable OS, probably Ubuntu, if it runs fine you can pretty much narrow it down to the hard drive. If you can't run something bootable, and the temps are good you have another problem.

The computer does not freeze when the fan is broken... The computer shuts down with out any warning like its power got cut.

By the way yes you hit the hard drive the hard drive has been damaged.

Not at all true... it completely depends on the motherboard and the CPU... I've seen all kinds of different things happen when CPUs overheat.

But yeah, no doubt it's the hard drive. No need to replace the whole lappy... you can get a decent hard drive for around $50-$100 depending on what size you want.

Yea, the 7200 rpm high speeds are available now for laptops. new egg has a excellent collection. How old is your moms laptop a 60 or 80 gig hard drive for laptops are very inexpensive.

You have definantly hit the hard drive like what Uria said you can pick up a better hard drive than what you have now for around $90 for a 120 GB.

Thanks a ton guys......everything still loads on the hard drive....so i can still back the stuff up and then put it on a new hard drive. The laptop is a little over a year old. It's a Toshiba Satellite (idk the model, it's not in the room), it has an 80 gig hard drive, 512 ram, it runs programs and then freezes. How do I check the temperature? Also any links to a new but affordable hard drive. Can it be installed myself without voiding any warrenty? Thanks for all the answers so far.

Also are you guys sure it's the hdd before i go and buy one.

Another question what does this mean? "try running a bootable OS, probably Ubuntu" as said above.
