I would like to use linux on my newest machine ( in my sig) because XP keeps corrupting on me. The problem is, i cant use the CD drive, the motherboard got screwed up when installing it into my case about 8 months ago. I have a 2gb flash drive, and wondering what i need to download to it for it to boot off of. I really need a link. I have been searching almost all day.

I am supposed to host a bunch of servers for a lan party this weekend, and need this machine running!!!!

Please help me get linux!

:)

Thanks,

Dan

Here is a starting link for you. Depending on the Distro, you can install everything *to* a flash drive and take it everywhere. As for using a flashdrive to install, I have never done so, but can possibly be done. You'll have to make sure your BIOS can boot from such a drive though.

Have you considered an external USB CD Rom Drive? Again, make sure BIOS can boot from one...

Ok, I am getting very confused by looking at all of these different versions and stuff. Is it possible you can link me to the file i can download directly to my flashdrive so i can install, or boot off of my flash drive?

I am very confused.

Sorry for the delay. Well, there are a lot of Distros to choose from, and often several 'flavors' of each Distro (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc.). I recommend Ubuntu; small learning curve for people just coming from Windows, and capable of an incredible amount; all that while being gorgeous to look at!

You can download the newest version here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

It's a 700mb file, so it will take a bit to download, but not too long if you have a good connection. As I mentioned before, I have never put it to a flash drive to install from, but if you look at the link I sent you before it may help you out a bit. I won't be able to help with many technical questions that could come up, and will probably refer you to the forums for Ubuntu, but I'll try. It may be a trial and error process, honestly.

You may also want to look at Puppy Linux or DSL (Damn Small Linux). Each of those is very small and the entire OS will actually fit on your flash drive once installed.

Thanks.

The site was slow i think it capped at 1.5mb/sec.

so i got it from my friends FTP.

Thank you very much, i will try installing it onto my 2gb flash drive.

And thank you optimum online 30/5 :D

I am very happy now :)

Most welcome. Post up and let us know if it worked or if you ended up installing *to* the flash drive.
