Actual virus code?

Does anyone know if there is a way of getting the actual code of a virus. all I hear is the signature of the virus but am sure someone other than the author should also be able to get access to the actual code right? Any suggestions where to look? BTW this is my first post on this forum!

Ya, just wanted to see the code of an actual virus...specifically the part where it instructs to "look" for other machines to infect .. am doing a thesis where I am trying to find an alternative way of detecting complex (metamorphic and polymorphic) viruses and wanted to kind of understand the exact way these are implemented..
