Newer AGP cards not working in older AGP slotted motherboards?

I've read in a few places that people have had difficulty with running the GeForce 7600GS in some cases, and a theory is that it simply doesn't respond with older model computer. My computer is a HP pavillion from around 01. Should I have any issues as such?

You probably will have problems - with that card anyway. It's unlikely that your power supply would power the 7600GS.

That card requires the following: Minimum of a 350 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 18 Amps.)

Open the case and check the label on your power supply. Make sure the power supply meets the recommendations above. Unfortunately, I can guarantee that a HP made in 2001 will not have a power supply adequate for that card. It doesn't hurt to check, however.

Consider building a cheap, budget rig. You can build one for as low as $600. If you've never built one, it's easy.

Where would i go to check for the power supply? i have the computer open.

also- my computer is a "media center" and came built able to display TV signals. Hope? A chance?

ill look for that sticker. would it be inside the computer or on the back?

You might have to unscrew the PSU (power supply) and look for the label. Sometimes the label is printed on the side that faces the case.
 
Alright..... so my computer's power supply is in fact a measly 200Ws.

At this point I'd just like to know what my options are. I'm sure my price range has gone down, but how about availability?

It's highly unlikely that you will successfully install a new power supply in the HP machine. The cases are not ATX form factor.

If you're looking for options on a new build, I suggest starting a thread in the Desktop Computers section. You'll receive some excellent recommendations. If you do not believe that you are capable of building a new PC (you are), you should probably buy a new one.

I guess I'll just wait a while until I have a bit of extra money to get that done.

It's too bad I was looking forward to playing a few games I own in vain.

I'll have to play on one of my lucky friend's super computers. :)

no biggy, even the 7600GS wont hit the 4x bandwidth


sorry mate but you may be reaching the end of you pcs gaming life. It will be fine as a work machine (depending on the work) for a while yet, but getting top games to work will be a challenge, and throwing in the occational upgrade may be futile
